Allow deletion of original file, keeping optimized version

I currently enable optimisation for all of my libraries because I don’t have high CPU specs. This reduces the time I need to sync kids movies to a tablet if I need to get out of the house, and for some titles is absolutely necessary to ensure playback as the transcoder can’t keep up in realtime.

However, once encoded, the original files are redundant - they’re just sat there taking up space on my disk. I want to delete them to make space for new titles, but if I do, then the optimised version gets deleted too. I’ve tried other tricks like moving the optimized version, and then deleting the original, but because of the way linux works, plex still has a handle to the optimized file, and is still able to delete it.

PLEASE, offer an option to delete the original file. I could see 3 ways this could work:

  • As part of the optimizations settings have an option “Preserve optimized version when original is deleted”
  • As part of the optimisations settings, have an option “Delete original after optimization”
  • In the title’s context menu, have an action “Replace original with optimized version”

I like this idea, you got my like.
