Often I would like to record a movie I already have because the one I have is not a great recording. I need to record the second before I can look at both and then decide which one is better or one might be wide screen and the other full screen and I keep both.
Currently, I have to delete the version I want to record again (save it in a different folder temporarily) so that Plex will accept my attempt to schedule the recording of the movie (It will not accept a recording if I already have this movie in any of my libraries).
This seems like something that would already be in plex but I have never found it.
There’s already an existing suggestion thread discussing an option to record items already available in your library. I suggest you comment/vote in that thread in order to help us avoid distracting or cannibalizing votes.
Unless I’m missing some unique aspect of your suggestion I’ll close this thread as a duplicate.
@rjrreid_cox_net , this “Prime Directive” that says “though shalt not record anything that remotely looks like something you already have” has been the biggest reason why people are constantly unable to record the things they want to record for many years now. The “feature request” referred to by @tom80H is already 5 years old now. Unless you plan to switch to another DVR software provider that cares about satisfying the most basic expectations of DVR software, I would suggest that you plan to wait at least another 5 years before this is looked at.
Thanks, I just went and voted for that.
I did notice that was put out there in 2017 and last commented on in 2021.
Please do not close my suggestion.
Mine is worded more concisely, is shorter and to the point.
More people might read and vote on a suggestion that is not many paragraphs long.
I almost did not get through all those words.
And mine was made this year, which is almost over now.
