Allow Shared Library Forced Transcoding for specific user accounts

Some family members of mine have older TVs that don’t stay current with Smart App updates. Due to this they are unable to stream media like h.265. Workarounds exist like forcing burn-in subtitles to force a transcode but trying to explain that to non-technical people is a nightmare.

it would be nice if in the settings for “Manage Library Access” you could force specific transcoding settings for certain friend/family accounts. e.g. force a x264 transcode for all media at a specific bitrate (even if the media bitrate is already low) to ensure compatibility

unless i’m missing something and this is already possible…

If a Plex client device does not support playback of a codec Plex Media Server is supposed to be transcoding to a compatible format. You don’t need to tell the server to do it on a user or device basis yourself.

I suggest you open a thread in Plex Players for the issue. You will need to give exact info on an example file they can’t play and their streaming device/Plex app version.

The TV apps should have a setting to allow direct play and allow direct stream. Turn these off and it will always transcode.
