Allow to not to record subtitles with DVR or display them with Live TV

Hello,

In France, almost all DVB-T channels include subtitles for the hearing impaired and these are therefore systematically recorded when a TV channel is recorded. An option not to record these subtitles would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Why don’t you want them in? As it’s just text they consume nearly no disk space.

…and they’re embedded so deeply in the video stream removing them takes a Herculean effort outside of Plex - inside Plex… who knows, but I assure you it ain’t happening without a big, fat transcode.

Outside Plex you can extract them with ffmpeg or MCEBuddy (during processing), and I assume any encoding not specifically targeted to include them (Handbrake) will ultimately remove them. They’re pretty much invisible to everything, but the aforementioned (including Subtitle Edit) and, Plex.

“Not Recording” them is impossible. They’re in the Video Stream being broadcast. The only way to remove them is by an encoding session - after they’ve been recorded.

Most people just ignore them - or use them - and if they’re like me, they flag the Video Stream with a Language, so they don’t show up ‘Unknown’ and annoy the bejebus out of ya.

I have MCEBuddy Extract them, process and include them back along-side the file as an SRT file. I can then doctor them up a bit - remove hearing impaired, for instance, and all those weird little inclusions that come from a CC stream, then they’re rather normal and I can mux them back in if I’m so inclined - or delete them.

…but that’s a whole 'nother thing entirely - completely OUT of Plex’s control or influence.

I don’t know if it’s technically feasible or if it’s complicated to do. My point was right to offer the option for those like me who don’t need it. I admit that it bothers me a little bit to have to disable them every time I watch live TV or a recording. To emphasize the ridiculous situation, on a TV the option to display these subtitles is disabled by default, it’s not for nothing, it’s precisely because it only activates if you need it. In short, just because you don’t see any disadvantages doesn’t mean it’s the case for everyone.

What client are you using? This could be a bug in the client vs a feature issue. I don’t know the impact of France vs US broadcasts, but subtitles are off by default for me in the Plex client for Roku, PMP, Plex app for Win, and Android mobile. I’ve never had to turn them off.

Yea, me too. My settings are such that if subs are flagged ‘Forced’ they’re on, or if the audio language is different from my own they’re on, but otherwise subs are off.

I imagine that ‘Always On’ setting is doing exactly what it’s name implies. Might be time to turn that off.

There is no NOT recording them. There could be, I guess, but not now (or soon).

It happens with all my clients (Nvidia Shield, Android, PMP, RasPlex, Windows). The problem is that I only watch movies and TV shows in English with French Subtitles (dubbing is often catastrophic in French). So, if I deactivate subtitles in my account settings. This will shift the problem since I would no longer have to disable subtitles when I watch live TV or recordings but I would have to enable them when I watch movies or TV series episodes. It’s quite problematic as a problem and I understand that it’s not possible, I’m just making this functionality proposal in case it’s possible.

Thank you! It’s always so insightful to see how others are using Plex. Not that my perspective matters, but IMHO this provides the use case rational for this request. (Though it does seem like a tough item to implement.)

If I understand correctly you want French subs whenever the audio language is English, but no French subs when the audio is French?

You might be able to periodically run, or trigger on folder changes, a script that batch removes DVB subtitle tracks from recordings with ffmpeg, but I agree that’s a bit messy.

Yes, I understand that sometimes some requests may seem strange, but in my case, it meets a real need. Maybe for others too.

Yep, that’s right. However, I would have preferred a more successful, integrated and sustainable solution than a possible script. But, indeed, maybe I’m asking too much and it’s just not technically or easily possible.
