Alternatives...?

For a while I have had 2 identical installations of Plex Server and PlexAmp V2B2 running on a Pi 3B+.

Mine is working fine, the other, my Fathers, is working, but tablets, phones and PCs keep losing the PlexAmp on the Pi so you are unable to control cast too and control playback. I’ve tried restarts of the Pi and the client devices, checked logs (those I’m aware of), nothing helps. I have reinstalled the Windows PlexAmp, and it is currently able to the Pi version, but the same trick on the Android devices hasn’t worked

Unless someone has any bright ideas I think I’m going to find some sort of alternative headless player that can be installed on the Pi and controlled from an Android device. It needs to either work with the Plex Server natively for its library, oi I guess could use DNLA (?).

One other possible alternative is if there is a comprehensive API for Plex Server allowing me to write some sort of front end my own to control playback of the server directly?
