I rarely use the Android app on my phone for Plex and when I do it’s always to show off how cool Plex is to a friend. The problem is that the Android App never works and I’m left there standing quite embarrassed.
Today was one of those days and after I got home I started to test why this is because I have been using Plex on old Chromecast devices, few different Ipads, Windows devices and anything with a web browser and it always works just fine BUT never when I try to just casually demo it to someone with my phone.
I made sure I had the latest server and phone app installed and started testing. First I was able to stream just fine using original quality when on my home wifi local network. Then I tried to stream using custom resolution and it always hangs or gives and error. Then tried streaming using 5G network and original quality works but not the custom resolutions and I had mine selected as 12mbps 1080p.
Then I reset the application cache and data and tried with default config. And it worked from the 5G network with potato quality. Ok. Then I tried to use custom resolution again with 1080p 12mbps. Nothing. Then put on the mobile network limitation and used the maximum 720p allowed quality in that mode and it worked again!
Interesing thing is that if I use the Edge browser on the phone then I can use whatever quality I want and it just works.
So whatever is limiting the Android phone app to 720p max quality. Please fix it.
Phone used Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra with 1 Gbps 5G plan.
