Any scanner that takes file name priority over folder name priority

I hate folder name priority in default scanner, it means so much fucked up matches I have no idea what the logic behind it even is.

Obviously the file will contain the important things so why use folder name?

Anyway rant over, can you tag Plex Devs on the post so they can fix it too?

Any custom scanners that do what I want?

@metrize The bare minimum information would be all of the below, none of which could be answered from your undocumented vent/rant

  • What library type have you created? Choice is: Movies, Series, Music, Photos, Home videos scanner
  • What scanner have you selected ?
  • What agent have you selected ?
  • What is the folder and path of the impacted file?
  • What “important things” in filename should be captured?

Have followed the following naming conventions:

Nonetheless, if it is about TV Series scanner, try the one in my signature (Absolute Series Scanner) which unlike the name indicates also works for season based series

My folder was just called season 7 so I assumed it would look at the files inside called The Simpsons S07EXX and put it in the Simpsons, but it makes a tv show called season 7

The scanner is the default one I think, TheTVDB?

It won’t work. Plex looks at the library folder and implies that the first level of folders is the series titles. You must put the “Season 07” folder inside a “The Simpsons” folder, and name the episodes like “title - s07exx.ext” for this to work. The idea that Plex should infer that “season 7” is a Simpson folder when it’s not put in a “Simpsons” folder, just because it has simpson files inside is a bit strange.

My scanner could if the file is on root folder make it work, but your naming convention is atrocious.
Not only that, but neither XBMC nor media companion would actually scrap correctly neither, it is a bad naming.
You need one of the following formats:

  • The Simpsons/the simpsons s07exx.ext
  • The Simpsons/Season 7/the simpsons s07exx.ext
  • The Simpsons/Season 7/the simpsons exx.ext

You didn’t follow established naming conventions indicated below and my previous post so will not reply further beyond this post

/TV Shows
/Grey’s Anatomy
/Season 01
Grey’s Anatomy - s01e01.avi
Grey’s Anatomy - s01e02 - The First Cut is the Deepest.avi
Grey’s Anatomy - s01e03.mp4
/Season 02
Grey’s Anatomy - s02e01.avi
Grey’s Anatomy - s02e02.mkv
Grey’s Anatomy - s02e03.m4v

Why not? The files inside say the Simpsons S07EXX so I’d rather it just ignore the folder name.

This needs to be a setting

Sorry but I don’t understand your point at all. Do you have just one TV serie in your library? If so, then your structure is “library folder/season xx/episodes” and you just need to add ONE folder named “The Simpsons” in the library folder to make Plex happy.

I don’t understand how your method can work for many TV series: do you put all first seasons episodes of every serie in the same “Season 01” folder? Admittedly, this is silly. Or do you use one library for each serie? Still uncomfortable.

This needs to be a setting

Honestly, no it doesn’t. Of all the strange requests based on personal ways of sorting files and folders this is by far the most difficult to understand

i concur with zpaolo11x

what is there not to understand? It’s simple. Ignore the folder name and only look at the video file name itself. Folder name isn’t the actual video which contains the information? The scanner does a terrible job and just literally creates a new “tv show” with the name of the folder

I give up…

The fact you edited your post doesn’t change the fact you insulted us. Good luck modifying the scanner yourself.

Edit: you chose not to follow documented naming conventions, and serie name folder for series libraries is a requirement. Please go towards Kodi or MediaManager which i believe will have the same restrictions.
It is possible to create a scanner for what you want, and i had it coded at some point within my Absolute Series Scanner (if adding a specifically named file in Logs folder) ages ago, but nobody was using it as it is easier to create a folder than to rename every files in a tv serie…
