Hi all.
Im wanting a small silent pc under my tv as a mini server for a number of bits including a Plex server.
Im wondering if I built it using a Dual Core 1.8Ghz intel i3 3217u processor, do you think it would handle transcoding to my Apple TVs?
Thanks!
It could transcode 1 single 1080p h264 stream with a maximum bitrate of 10Mbps since it has 2280 passmark points: http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Core+i3-3217U+%40+1.80GHz
Wolf you say it could because of the passmark points!
You have one! Does it do that?
I have an i3 and i5 and streaming results about the same.
I cannot work out why some transcode and some don’t.
But then I copy/convert all mkv’s to mp4 so transcoding seems not to be an issue.

I did some tests in the past, when I had ArchLinux installed on NUC. Transcoding was fine to my iPad (this was the only device which needed it), some mkv 1080p h264 at 7-8Mbps. Now my PMS is installed on NAS (DS1515+) and it transcodes fine the same files to my iPad, the CPU is near 2400 passmarc points as well.
I use “could” because I did not make extensive tests, I can only confirm my current hardware with my files is able to transcode to my iPads. My transcoding needs are really few.
@spikemixture probably some files have an high bitrate and CPU soaks…let’s post mediainfo data.
cool, thanks.
Im trying to decide if the flexibility of a NUC is better than just buying an Nvidia Shield. They are mighty cheap for a Plex server! Its just not as flexible as a NUC for file shares etc
