Apple M1 Mac Mini?

Keeping thread alive as I too am holding off buying the Mini M1. It will just be a plex server so should I go for the 8GB or 16GB?

I’d say go for it. Get the 16GB though if you can afford it! It’s always better to future proof. I pulled the trigger since that last post of mine and installed it (even though it’s running Rosetta 2 and not natively yet). I figured the transition will be fine. It’s like any other normal software update (on my end at least. I know on the backend some magical things had to happen).

That being said, we’re probably getting closer now to another wave of new Apple silicon macs, so maybe you could even wait until the second half of the Mac mini’s get the M1X chip or whatever they call it? I’m sure it’d be more powerful even than this M1. (Which is a freaking beast. I can’t seem to get the fans to kick on. And when they do, they’re so quiet. This thing sips power, too. Love it.)

Amy word on an M! version of Plex Server?

I just assumed PLEX was M1 ready and almost all my other apps are. It’s running pretty good under Rosetta 2 but I can’t wait for a native install.

I’m surprised it’s taking them so long, then again, not.

Longtime user and a very happy one generally, I moved from London to Stockholm about 7 months ago and it was quite an upheaval. Only just got around to setting up a new server, which I did with a new Mac mini M1 16GB. It seemingly worked fine but then after first day or so it crashed overnight every night. I was literally only running PMS and eliminated every other possibility. Then as of today PMS crashed and won’t reopen, I’ve tried deleting install files, downloading new version etc. Nothing works. I think my only option is to try a clean install. Any ideas before I commit to that path? I know technically not the right thread, but ultimately I guess what I’m asking is when will Apple Silicon version of PMS be available? Any timeframes? I’ve survived 7 months I can manage a few more

You could try creating a new user just for running Plex. That’s what I do on with my main Mac that also does server duty anyway, and it’s more secure too as Plex won’t have access to your home directory.

So where’s the Silicon native app guys? It’s been quite a long time. Is it even in development?

In addition to anything about Plex Media Server itself, I’d also really like to know if Apple Silicon native versions of the Plex Player will be coming.

Im in the process of upgrading from an older MacPro, Im interested in this as well. I already have an M1 MBP - it is about 3x faster than my Intel i9.

Native M1 Plex Please!

Thanks,

Erick

I have to say that I’m some what disappointed on how we still haven’t gotten a universal install of Plex. It;'s been close to a year since its release and new macOS Big Sur. We all know that macOS Monterey is right around the corner. and there’s some hope that a new M1X or M2 MacMini will be released. I would really love to have a native install of Plex running on M-class processors. I mean Plex is already doing on iPad for several year now. So why the huge delay with macOS devices. Can someone from the Plex engineering team shed some light and potential gives a realistic timeline if this will ever be?

Yes, I think a lot of the Plex Pass members with M1’s are wondering the same thing. Guess paying for a product doesn’t mean that you will be kept in the loop with such an important server upgrade. Obviously the Plex staff don’t give a rats a___ about us and are completely ignoring our continued questions about this upgrade. They obviously forget that they are where they are because we paid for their product. Plex staff, forget about the flashy backgrounds and give us some answers.

Could it be it’s a wait for the official release version, like many developers? I do understand they do have access to developer builds of MacOS, yet Apple may change path at last minute.

  1. Less variables
  2. Less corrections and releases.
  3. Less fragmented expectations of a compatible server product.

I’m like you all, waiting to upgrade to Monterey. We need to wait awhile, I know what you are going to say…
Yes me too, we need to just wait a bit longer.

Let me get this effing right.
You’ve spent all this time fixing ā€œSyncā€ and we’re STILL waiting for the Apple Silicon version ONE YEAR LATER.

Couldn’t run a bath…

Any updates on this? Plex server is is still emulated on my M1 Mac.

This is what is completely frustrating. All they can say is that it’s under development. At least give us a road map of when they anticipate this going live. I mean how hard is it to make it M1 compatible? They already have the player working on iOS devices. It just doesn’t make any sense honestly.

Just doing my monthly check to see if there has been any development towards M1 native compatibility. I see nothing has changed. Sad.

No. Don’t ask them, they don’t answer.
Just keep paying.

I would take PLEX not crashing nightly on my M1 mini at this point.

It is utterly absurd how there’s 0 insight or updates on the roadmap for this. Hell, Dropbox is beating them to support. The unreliable Rosetta performance is just icing on the cake.
