Apple Player Update Beta Testing - Archive

All of the PGS and SRT issues seem to be fixed in the new build this morning (9478). PGS small and large issues now display correctly centered and at the bottom of the screen.

SRT does not display the < i> any more, but the subs are not italicized (not sure if it’s supposed to?). It shows SRT subs as italicized on the Plex web player. Thanks for all the quick fixes!

Oh and the PiP player automatically shows when closing Plex and continues playback with subtitles! No interruptions and keeps using the experimental player. SWEET!

Thanks @Craig_Holliday

I don’t think today’s build has the experimental player but rather uses the older MPV player as there is no note in the release notes mentioning the experimental player.

Weird because it did mention it.

But refreshing TestFlight changed the description…

8.42 (9478) - Technical details indicate it is the Experimental player.

Stand corrected…

(9478) is the mp4 player.

I should have read my email first

:grinning:, I was just checking 9478 and it was showing mpv as the player

9470 is experimental though.

Correct, did not look close enough. my bad.

I didn’t expect another update so quick, hence reading my email corrected my understanding.

Looks like I missed out on 9470. How was everyone’s experience with it?

Hi, for my use case I find it works well. Will know more in the coming days trying it over numerous file types

Thank you for adding me a couple of weeks back. I have been trying the new player on and off now and I was ready to give feedback but most of the things I have experienced were fixed, mostly multi channel audio not playing some channels, huge subs etc.

On Apple TV 4K 2nd gen, I also have noticed very strong improvements with 4k HLS playback on the new player compared to the barely playable state it’s in on store version. Although it’s still not playing content at a fixed 25fps and oscillate with lower frame rates, making it jittery and not smooth. I also noticed stutter playing 1080p HEVC content on it, but that was versions ago I will need to re-test that.

To add, discovered today while testing the new HEVC server beta that forcing a transcode on the Apple TV experimental player will correct the small font/playment issue of PGS subtitles.

Actually, need to make a correction.. transcoding UHD media to 1080p corrects subtitle issues, but going down to 720p makes them giant again. Looks like PGS placement isn’t mapping correctly to the media resolution?

UHD - Direct Play (Too Small):

720p - Transcode with HEVC Preview (Too Large):

1080p - Transcode with HEVC Preview (Just Right):

PGS Subtitles also appear to be slightly ahead of audio…maybe half a second. But it’s not on every file (and I’ve confirmed on ones I’m seeing the issue on that the media itself is in sync).

Generally, unless a build has actually been removed, you can find and install older versions in TestFlight under “Previous Builds”. 9470, which is currently the latest experimental build, is still available for installation.

Thanks. It looks like I don’t have access to the experimental builds which would explain it.

Not sure what the latest workarounds are but on latest beta version, I’m still getting frame drops on latest Apple TV 4K while watching larger formats 4K with DTS. ATV is in a cabinet fwiw. What can I do to help?

Are you using 8.42 (9470), and do you happen to have match rate turned on in the Apple TV settings?

Yes 8.42 and of course frame rate matching is turned on

There are two versions of 8.42: 9470 which had the experimental player and 9478 which uses the mpv player.

Does the sync issue continue if you disable match rate?

I’m on 9478 and no the issue does not continue with frame rate matching OFF, but I struggle with turning it off since I prefer 24fps for movies.

Totally understand, as I’m seeing similar issues with Match Rate turned on, but I’ve only been able to replicate the sync issue with TrueHd source audio that transcodes to FLAC, haven’t seen it with DTS.

What tvOS version are you on? And which AppleTV are you using?

I have checked for an update and I have the latest version of tv OS. I have the latest 4K ethernet Apple tv model. Yes movie has dts. But I do have a lot of frame drops with 4K movies and Dolby audio as well. I understand that frame rate matching being disabled helps but it defeats the purpose imo
