Can concur that it stutters with Original Quality and Convert Automatically, more so with Original.

Can I get an invite to the beta player? I filled out the form a few days ago.
I am also experiencing the extreme stutter on 4K content. Any other workarounds?
Are you using the TestFlight beta this thread is for?
If so then it’s probably best to post some media information about the problem files and debug output from the Plex beta to see if the thermal state is involved.
At this point (I believe) the beta is just being worked for frame loss (due to thermal throttling) and audio sync issues. However it has pretty severe color banding issues for HDR/DV media that others and myself have seen, so it’s not really ready for prime-time either way.

This seems to be some and not all HDR/DV.
For myself it has been a improvement in compatibility, so a step in the right direction
Hey, again y’all,
It seems that many of the problems that are continuously being seen are related to DV/HDR content.
I’m looking into these issues, but it will be helpful for everyone experiencing issues with stuttering or incorrect colors to try the current production iOS/tvOS app.
I’m looking for regressions to narrow down new issues vs existing issues.
If you are experiencing audio sync issues, can you also try the production app? If the problems have gotten any better that will be beneficial to know.
Hi Craig, so to make this clear your referring to Plex Media Server 1.40.1.8227 at present being the Production app.
Is that correct?
I think they are referring to the recent update to the official Apple TV app.
Sorry i mean the current production iOS/tvOS apps.
on both iOS and tvOS?
@Craig_Holliday just tested the latest production tvOS app and I’m seeing a difference with HDR10 colours, compared to the beta release. The production release looks accurate, the beta appears to have raised blacks.
I could see it with every HDR movie I watched. But, I can send a sample if helpful. It wasn’t as drastic on my C3 as the Samsung someone showed above, but if you toggle to AVPlayer you can see it (the current production version of the tvOS app is MUCH closer to AVPlayer than the beta). Easily seen on credits as well, since the black point should be the same as any letter boxing.
TBH I’ve just been testing with tvOS on a few different displays so far. There I see pronounced color banding and raised black levels on (what seems like) most 4k HDR/DV media. I plan on getting more scientific with it this weekend though.
Hi Craig and co.
I have a variety of setups on which I am running the regular Plex TestFlight Beta. I have signed up for your beta build, but am yet to hear anything.
Across all three set ups, I am consistently encountering issues:
• out-of-sync audio,
• complete loss of audio after watching for a while (fixable by backing out of the movie and then hitting Play again)
• intermittent video stuttering, particularly on 4K remuxes.
• Dolby Vision tone mapping being wildly “off” resulting in very muted colours - though I don’t have issues with green or purple colour, nor overblown banding. I understand this issue is out-of-scope of your particular efforts, though.
These are my setups:
• Apple TV 4K (A2169 - 2021) connected to GigE,
• HDMI in to LG SK9Y 7.1.2 Atmos soundbar,
• HDMI out to Hisense 55PX OLED TV.
This setup supports up to 4K HDR10 + Dolby Atmos.
• Apple TV 4K (A2169 - 2021) connected to GigE,
• HDMI in to Hisense 55Q8 TV,
• HDMI ARC to Panasonic 3.1ch soundbar.
This setup supports up to 4K Dolby Vision + Dolby Digital Plus
• Apple TV 4K (A1842 - 2017) connected to WiFi 6,
• HDMI in to LG 65C1 OLED TV,
• HDMI ARC to Sony 5.1ch soundbar.
This setup supports up to 4K Dolby Vision + Dolby Digital Plus.
• Apple TV 4K (A1842 - 2017) connected to WiFi 6,
• HDMI in to a Hitachi 1080p TV
This setup supports up to 1080p SDR + 2.0 stereo. This setup has NO audio or video issues with 1080p content.
My Plex server runs on a Synology DS918+ (not in Docker).
I am keen to test your build across my three setups and report back. Thanks!
Hoping for a few more invites processed…
Submitted mine last weekend.
I’m seeing almost no stuttering on 1080p and 2160p content using the beta tvOS app both on new content and content that previously had an intermittent stutter. I have also seen far less audio sync issues, though I am using the new audio engine with an offset. It is a remarkable improvement at least for me.
However, I am definitely seeing some color issues with Dolby Vision and HDR content. There’s some banding in bright scenes that wasn’t there before and some whites are washed out with incorrect colors. It’s not on all content but I can confirm it is a regression with this beta version of the app as it doesn’t happen on the same model Apple TV with the production app that I have in another room with the exact same av setup.
So far I am very happy with the progress being made here. Keep up the great work!
My setup using this beta app…
Apple TV 4K (A2843 - 2022) connected via gigabit ethernet. It is connected via HDMI to a Sony Receiver (which supports Atmos) and passes through to an LG OLED.
Also, everything is properly Direct Playing if that’s helpful at all.
How did you go with the samples provided in this discussion
I’ll give them a try this evening and report back.
As a follow up to my post from last night, I tried out the three sample files from earlier in the discussion.
The stuttering file (Birds of Prey) still stutters and the two banding files (1917 and The Greatest Showman) also have banding on my setup.
As an additional test, I tested out my versions of those movies (1:1 rip from the UHD discs) and can see the banding on 1917 and Birds of Prey too. However, my version of Birds of Prey (again 1:1 rip from the UHD disc) does not exhibit the stuttering. I’m not sure what to make of that but mentioning it here as a data point.

I’ve noticed the blacks are super blotchy as well.
I thought there was only one beta so far to address the stuttering problem? I’m on 8.34 (8096).
.
The hardware is Apple TV 4K, 3rd generation, tvOS 17.4 (21L227).
