The New Experience has made it into the normal TestFlight for tvOS as well. It’s very 2026.18 build 1992. So even if you’re not in the “New Experience” specific TestFlight group, you may see it if you’re in the standard TestFlight group.
no wonder. Ok, I do see the regular TestFlight for Plex is indeed full. Guess I’ll have to keep checking back. Hopefully they delete some inactive users.
Tried the beta again today, and it’s great to see the navigation issues seemingly fixed. I’m still curious about the playback performance though, could it be fake Dolby Vision, for example? Do we know what’s being worked on for playback, like hardware support, or is it still software-based like the old player, as I understand it?
Its probably fake dolby vision, yeah. The player is hardware supported though, which is why the micro stutters don’t happen. As far as plans, Plex has been very reluctant to share anything. I think because they think they’ll be asked to share a timeline/eta and they (probably wisely) don’t want to give that. I did have one dev tell me that HDR10+ is in the plans though.
So I must ask, what evidence do you have of Dolby Vision being Fake? Is your testing displayed on a known Dolby Vision compliant device. Personally myself, it is very obvious toggling the setting on my Apple TV 4K that a much better picture is displayed on my LG OLED. If that is not evident to yourself, I would be checking your HDMI cable and Display specifications.
Now if your were talking Dolby ATMOS, it is clearly not supported at this point. I dearly wish it was supported as the Plex ATV client has come a long way. So for me unfortunately, it’s only older content being used to play with the Plex New Experience app.
In the legacy app, Plex would force the DV flag but still output only the HDR10 fall back content when playing Profile 7 media. I’ve tried to get clarification on if this is what they are doing with the New Experience tvOS as well, as the DV flag on LG TVs does trigger. However no one from Plex has confirmed if this is the case, or if they’re doing on the fly conversion from Profile 7 to 8.1 like the Neptune Jellyfin client does or something like DV7toDV8 does.
Yeah, the legacy app having fake DV and Plex being mum about this (though they have been mum about this entire beta. When was the last time someone from Plex even commented here?) doesn’t instill great confidence that it is real DV.
So as I implied in my last post, there is NO proof, only reporting of radio silence which has triggering all this speculation of Fake Dolby Vision.
Conclusion… Humbug
Considering that they used fake DV in the legacy app and mums the word from them about the beta, the burden of proof is on them to prove that it isn’t fake. We can’t just take their word for it since…they haven’t given any word about it.
Why is it on them to say anything when in Beta? Being realistic, Plex is not the only Tech company to practise silence when in development.
Mind you, I’m not saying that it is right nor wrong.
I don’t know what to tell you if you don’t think some clarity isn’t needed to have good faith trust in what we are seeing after having fake DV for years. You do you, but imo you’re being naive.
Why be frustrated, there is an alterative for my OS that works fine. I have a fantastic Media Server and life is good with my LG OLED. If Plex are faking Dolby Vision, I can’t believe the Quality picture my eye balls see when set correctly with ATV 4K.
So if Plex come clean and it’s as you say bad news, I won’t Cry fowl. Sh.t happens
I just looked at some videos on the latest build, 2026.18.0 (992), and it’s still incorrect not only for DV, but for regular HDR10 videos as well. In addition to that, I tried playing an HLG video, and for some reason it triggered Dolby Vision on my TV (the Infuse player falls back to regular HDR).
There is also still no option to set the delay for audio tracks, and text subtitles (SRT) still don’t adhere to the style selected in the Apple TV settings.
So, the player is still in pretty rough shape. On the other hand, the app itself seems to be a lot better than the last time I tried it. Even though I’m still not a fan of the custom player, it’s now at least usable. Still, if you compare how much smoother and more precise it is to scrub through the progress bar on the native player compared to the new player in Plex, it’s obvious why the native player will always be preferable, even compared to a good custom one.
When will the production version be released to the tvOS App Store??? I’ve never seen anything take this long before. They release entirely new versions of IOS on a 12 month cycle. What is the f*(&@ng hold up here???
