Current Missing Features & Bugs with the AppleTV App Experience Preview

Some overall concerns expressed by the user community here and in other forums:

  • New UI/UX buries user content behind more menu pages meaning it takes more clicks to access content that required less clicks in the current app.
  • New Playback Interface feels very “Non-Apple” and moves away from the tvOS app trend of using Apple’s AVPlayerViewController “native player” that most users are familiar with.
  • Users have expressed concerns with moving Navigation of Sections to the Top of the Screen instead of the Left Side of the Screen where they feel it may have been a better use of space.
  • Overall the app feels slow and laggy, but video playback of UHD content feels more stable and in sync over the current public app. Overall navigation and loading speeds much improved since 2025.16

AppleTV HD Support
  • H264 1080p content only displays a black screen with audio
  • With new HEVC Transcode Server version, transcodes are not automatically switched to H264 for the AppleTV HD like they are with the current release client. This is regardless of Direct Play/Stream setting.
  • No option for “old player” Plex recognizes when content needs the legacy playback engine and will force transcodes as needed.
  • HEVC Content does display an image, but content is very skippy and unwatchable. HEVC content force transcodes to h264. This is now intended.
  • UHD Content does not downconvert/transcode to 1080p and instead trys to play at UHD HDR. This is very skippy and does not have tone mapping.
  • 1080p HDR content is not tone mapping for SDR screens.
  • The “cursor” does not keep up with the user. The “cursor” sticks to locations when swiping on the remote so the user has to wait for the interface to catch up.
  • Home Screen artwork suffered from color and line distortions
  • 2025.18 added additional Home Screen loading issues and the screen often hangs for up to a minute at a time before a user can navigate.

Running smooth so far but wow does not having the subtitle search really suck lol Hopefully gets added in a new version.

Was wondering does the appletv have enough processing power to run something like fast-whisper to do automatic live subtitling?

  • can’t start playback by just pressing play/pause button on the remote
  • subtitles turn transparent when using a different style or different font than default in tvOS settings (see BUG: transparent subtitles)

Thanks Manujito, will add to both iOS and tvOS trackers

I’m getting audio distortions/dropped audio when playing multichannel connect to AirPod Pros Gen 2.

FYI, there are multiple issues with the new client on AppleTV HD (4th Gen):

  • H264 1080p content only displays a black screen with audio
  • With new HEVC Transcode Server version, transcodes are not automatically switched to H264 for the AppleTV HD like they are with the current release client. This is regardless of Direct Play/Stream setting.
  • No option for “old player”
  • HEVC Content does display an image, but content is very skippy and unwatchable.

OK, I just installed this too and it seems as though there’s no user selection on first run or app exit.

On the existing app, each time I open it I am present when a list of the Plex users that are in my home and I can select which one is watching. This app doesn’t seem to do that. I can switch users but it’s a pretty cumbersome process and it means that until the user is switched my kids can access my profile (and everything on the server).

I should add, the app also feels very slow. Moving off the main panel up to the tabs at the top is frustrating. It’s almost as though the cursor is “stuck” in the bottom section of the screen.

OK, I know I’m replying to myself here but I left the app for a bit and this time it gave me a user list. Not sure what changed, perhaps there’s a timeout? The old app presented the list each time.

This app is very slow though. When I move the cursor over an item it doesn’t change the description for almost a full second. Compared to the old app it’s very frustrating to use.

Also seeing that the following profile features are missing when there are multiple users:

  • No option for auto-login for specific profile (used on the Apple TV in my bedroom, iPad, iPhone, and my wife uses it for her phone/laptop, etc.)
  • It is not prompting to sign-in or reenter the passcode for accounts that are passcoded, when minimizing and going back to the app, or when the screensaver kicks on, or closing/reopening the app
  • Switching profile requires too many steps now, going to “Account” then moving over to “Switch Profile”, then finally selecting a profile

These things are a non-starter for me, as I have little kids and have their account with no passcode and limits on content types, then my wife and I, and other kids have their own profiles with passcodes so everyone can have their own viewing experience. This really messes that up, especially if you forget to switch to the non-passcode kid profile.

Also, when I fired up the various profiles in the new experience preview, every Home was blank, until I went back in and “hearted” the various libraries, but then switching to TV or Movies, requires going to “Libraries” and then selecting the library, which feels backwards for something I just “hearted”/favorited.

The Spatial Audio / Spatialize Stereo option is disabled when wearing AirPods. It works fine in the regular Plex app. - This is a pretty big one for me and mine.

Also, the play/pause button on my remote works fine, contrary to a few posts in this thread. - Missing the controls for ‘Reduce Loud Sounds’ as well.

Where is the play and shuffle button, this is a basic thing to have

Everything i try to play that is profile 7 dv (dv and hdr10) doesn’t fall back to hdr10 but tries to transcode

So it’s even more than that

Just tries to transcode no matter what

New player vs old

The Skip Credits and Skip Intro buttons aren’t clickable. Clicking the center remote button just toggles play/pause. It looks like it’s selected, but pressing center remote still just toggles play/pause… you have to swipe over to the Skip button to skip… and then it just circles until you press play again :grimacing:

I am not sure if this relates to the codec support, but when I attempted to play a movie with TrueHD 7.1 Atmos audio, the channel with the vocals is super muffled in the background or sometimes non-existent, while music and sound effects play pretty clearly. If I switch to EAC 5.1 it plays fine with no audio lag. If I switch to Infuse and play the TrueHD audio, it plays fine. Is this something that will be coming in the future? I will say that on the stable Plex app, TrueHD has a slight audio lag that has also made me always switch back to Infuse.

Its always been odd that Infuse has certain capabilities that the Plex tvOS app doesn’t have and that this has been the case for some time. I hope this gets resolved in the future so that I can finally ditch Infuse’s awful UI (which even though I think the new Plex UI is a downgrade from the previous stable version’s, still miles better than Infuse’s UI).

UI/UX:

  • As mentioned, no ‘easy way’ to see OTA LiveTV
  • No option to retain/remember last tab(recommended/browse/collections) within a library(it defaults to recommended)
  • Library Filter on Browse tab is not retained/remembered (ie:sort by release date/name/etc.)

I am having a hard time adjusting the library names at the top of the library section. When many libraries are used(ie: 10-12) scrolling horizontally seems much slower / less intuitive.

Once again, Dolby Vision Profile 5 plays incorrectly and displays the purple/green tint.

Do you have Direct Play enabled on the new player? It’s in Settings ➜ Video and Audio ➜ Direct Play.

What AppleTV do you have?

I’m not having any issues Direct Playing UHD HDR content on my AppleTV 4K.

Both screenshots below are using the new player.
