Any word on when this will be fixed? I had been using OpenPHT for the past year because of this issue, but would like to go back to the official app if we can either change the volume mapping, or if the buttons are put back to a reasonable default. This is a show stopper for me.

I am exactly in the same situation, waiting for a reasonable fix. Meanwhile, there has been this terrific new iOS version, which has raised far more opposition… without no more answer 
What a joke this hasn’t evolved in any way since PMP release, you guys plainly suck.
PMP still sucks and is less functionnal than the previous app or OPHT.
But both OPHT and the desktop app are now abandoned.
Video freezes when audio is going on for 5 seconds on all computer apps osx or windows (dont have the issue on my shield at least) are still widespread and have NEVER been addressed.
For Blizzard or the Plex team, growth came at the cost of whatever made them good to begin with, not bad if you learn not to care about your product and customers as you go along your financial results.

I agree with every word @deceze said. Please use the up and down buttons for volume control during playback.
