Why is there no longer any volume control? Pretty important feature to be missing from a media player application. Is this on purpose?
I tried the first version and there was no volume control. I updated to the newer version today and still no volume control. On the previous version, I could connect with the web app or the app from an Android device and where the volume controls should have been, they were just missing entirely from those interfaces as well.
Since updating PMP today, now I’m not seeing Plex Media Player as a local device to remote control through the web app or the Android application on my phone and tablet…
I second this, what ever happened to using the + & - keys to adjust volume. I can’t even adjust the system volume to lower it. I currently have my mac on mute and it’s still playing audio!
it would be great to add this to future fixes.
I think a “volume control” might be useful to some but I really believe that volume should be controlled by the device that is producing the sound. The TV or the sound system seems the best and most appropriate place for the volume to be controlled.
I would say the adding an internal volume control to PMP should be on the “to do” list but it should be close to the bottom.
It’s on the todo list. We had the argument that Elijah had as well. We figured that most people would have it hooked up to something that produced sound and controlled volume that way. Adding another mixer is not without problems, a common report for PHT was that they could not hear sounds and it was because the internal mixer was turned down.
But yeah we have seen some good arguments to have it there so we are adding it back in at some point.
Fantastic! While I agree that its simpler to use the device playing the media to control the volume, I do have a couple of weird setups where it’s just not possible. I am glad to hear those funky hardware configs won’t be forced to use PHT and will be able to use the future software updates!
So i use a mac mini and a TV… but the TV is nothing more than a viewing device … Audio is a MUST have… using a apple remote and then another remote for volume … hmmm
Mac Mini attached to computer monitor with computer speakers. I am not interested in getting up and manually adjusting the volume on my speakers every time I need to change the sound level. Getting speakers with a separate remote for my small office is overkill, and I’m not interested in having two remotes anyway.
Built-in volume control is a must-have for me.
A good compromise would be a toggle in the settings to turn it off for people who prefer using only their playback device to control volume. You could name it “Software volume control” or something like that.

Except choice is something that the Plex developers do not seem to like.
In many threads I have heard things like:
“Making something a ‘simple’ toggle is not really simple.”
“A toggle produces additional point of failure.”
“People get confused by having too many choices.”
“We want all interfaces to be the same and what you want cannot work in some.”
“There is no need for a toggle when the current client works well as is.”
And there have been many many more “reasons” given for there not being many choices in a given interface but they all really amount to is, "The users, except for a few advanced special users, are just too stupid to handle choices beyond the bare minimum.
The Plex teams do a wonderful job but in this area I believe they are seriously underestimating the intelligence of their user base and/or they are trying to avoid actually producing documentation and relying on keeping the interface “simple.”
The reality is that Plex is complicated and no matter what it is going to be complicated to use and adding a fair number of choices is not going to make much difference in complexity either for the users or for the programmers. Once you reach a certain level of complexity add more does not make a big difference and all Plex clients passed that level a long time ago.
It also seems that Plex is trying to make their programs fool proof and that too is doomed to failure.
“Programming today is a race between software engineers striving to build bigger and better idiot-proof programs, and the Universe trying to produce bigger and better idiots. So far, the Universe is winning.” Rich Cook
+1 Big issue with no volume! I use to watch loads of films on my macbook, no I either get blown out of the room or can’t hear a thing. Please bring it back soon.
Same here, I also use PMP on my mac laptops. Having the App completely ignore the OS volume level is a deal breaker! Skip volume level if audio is passed through HDMI or Optical. Kodi handles this well for example.
Yeah, the app is essentially unusable on Mac at this point due to the bizarre handling of volume control. I can’t find any way to turn it down since I just connect to my Mac with wired headphones that lack independent volume control. Either provide control in the app, or turn off whatever you did to over-ride the existing mac volume controls.

Turn off exclusive mode for now under audio settings and it should restore volume control. We are adding soft-volume back in a future version.

I also want this option back. Even it the app can just mute, increase and decrease the default sound device that will be a great help.

Is it a “bug” that having Exclusive Mode enabled overrides OS X’s volume control, or is that the intended behavior? Figured it out on my own just now and came looking for a place to report it, but it sounds like y’all are already aware that it happens.
Pretty weird to adjust the volume in OS X and see the volume overlay on top of Plex, but have the volume remain absolutely constant.
