Apple Silicon support for Plex player (At least)

Sorry, I misspoke, not the video player. It’s the front-end engine we use called QT. MPV is the actual video player and they already support the M1. QT is working on M1 support.

Huh?

“The video player used by Plex for Windows currently does not run natively on the M1. We are hoping this will change in the future at which time we will very likely offer a native M1 client app.”

The logic makes no sense tbh

Euh… Maybe i’m wrong but QT is already available for the ARM architecture (5.15 with patches and 6.2).
And it’s been a while since the first BETA (December 2021).
I still dont understand why we can’t have a native player.

Perhaps because you missed the part in the prior comment made 10 hours earlier:

Hopefully that makes more sense.

Correct about 6.2 but as I’ve stated elsewhere on this forum, 6.2 doesn’t build properly on all the platforms. This is a Qt bug and we have to rely on them to fix it.

I think Windows was confusing here.

Plex for Windows and Plex for Mac are the same code. It uses the Qt framework which supports both platforms. When Plex compiles it, they choose a Windows or Mac target. I imagine that inside Plex they’re considered a single synonymous product.

Plex for iOS is a significantly different app. I don’t think Qt is used there. The idea of making Plex for iOS more useful on the desktop is really interesting.

Oops. My mistake there. Should have said “Plex for Mac”.

The idea of making Plex for iOS more useful on the desktop is really interesting.

Plex for iOS already runs on MacOS. The app is meant for touch devices so if you have a touch screen, it will work pretty well. With a mouse and keyboard, not so much. Making it work with a keyboard and mouse is not an easy task.

You could just flip the switch in Xcode to say it can be installed on macOS and let us decide whether it’s useable or not…

Not sure what you are asking? As mentioned, Plex for iOS already runs on MacOS.

True but only if you’re using the Apple Silicon. And obviously, it’s meant for touch devices and you should know as a Plex Employee that macOS does not have any touch devices. Therefore your statement about “it is meant for touch devices” says it all that Plex needs to update their desktop apps to run natively on Apple Silicon.

Almost two years since the release of Apple Silicon and Plex is still behind the times.

Plex is the only “Intel” app that is running on my Mac Studio. We, I’m speaking for all of Plex’s customers who bought monthly, annual and lifetime subscriptions deserve more. More than “Download the iOS/iPad app” / “QT is not ARM Ready”

It does work on macOS but is not optimized for macOS. On a retina screen, buttons and letters are tiny.

Plex just needs to optimize the current iOS/iPad app and port it over to macOS.

Yes, sorry - I didn’t know, but it works.
There’s a flag in (I believe) Xcode, that needs to be set to allow install of iPad and iPhone apps to be installed on macOS as well. Which you apparently has set.

So whats the status now ? I prefer a QT app but maybe the iOD works also good… But why not enable BOTH of them for Mac with Apple Silicone…

presumably still waiting for the QT issues to be fixed. The bigger story here is that if you’re a plex user on an M1 Mac, Safari is really the only viable platform to use right now. All the other plex apps or web browsers have issues that make them unusable, for me at least.

iOS app: color banding in HDR/DV videos. extremely simplified UI. No management tools at all.

Plex Web (non safari): no x265 support, last time I checked at least. I know Firefox still hasn’t. maybe someone can chime in if other browsers have finally added it.

Plex for Mac: slow, unstable, and no apple silicon support. literally the only app I would use on a daily basis that hasn’t been updated for it yet. It has been almost 2 years now.

I’ve tried both “Plex for Mac” and the iOS app, and found both fully functional and useable. Especially the Plex for Mac, which I’ve been using continuously since I got my first (13" with Touch Bar) M1 MBP around Christmas-time 2020, up till now on a 14" M1 Pro with macOS 13 beta on…

But - I’d still like to have an Apple Silicon - native app for macOS.

My experience on Mac is similar to yours. I really hope Plex releases an Apple Silicon version of the client soon.

Any updates regarding an Apple Silicon Native App?

All I hear are crickets from Plex

Is there any update on this? Is there a vote-buton somewhere?

I just purchased a lifetime Plex pass. It’s quite dissappointing to see there’s no way to stream HDR video through Plex to my mini-led MBP 16in. Having to use a third party player destroys the otherwise seamless experience.

Plex HTPC and the native Plex app both claims to be direct play, but it is quite obvious it’s only playing in SDR. Of course no browsers I’ve tried, including safari, will play HDR with plex. Now I’m back streaming the old fassion way with SMB and IINA player.

have you tried using the iOS app?

I tried running the ipad verison of plex from the app store, also no HDR.

Is there any estimate on when Plex for Mac will be updated with a Universal Binary? Alternatively, is there a place that I can monitor for developments on this topic? I’m trying to avoid installing Rosetta for a variety of reasons.

I believe the QT team fixed the issue on their end, in this Jira thread:
