I have just bought a first gen. Apple tv box and when I plug it in, all I get is a flashing light. The tv just shows a picture of the box with a flashing "?" above it. I have tried mucking about with the remote and get no results. Im sure its just sitting on standby, but can't see anyway to get it to actually turn on. I followed Apples instructions and restarted the box and just got the same results. Can anyone help me please?
I believe it means that either the operating system is corrupt or it has been wiped clean. Try creating a thumb drive with an crystalbuntu or openelec build specifically geared to replace the apple system for the appletv1. the procedure for doing so are easily explained on either site. You CANNOT add Plex to the original Appletv1 with the old apple operating system, at least not any more!
You can then add Plex via plexbmc plugin.
