Apple TV (4th gen) keeps changing video to 720p and can't be changed to 1080p

I play my movies on Apple TV (4th Gen). But it keeps defaulting the video to CONVERT TO 720p HD. And it can’t be changed. I’ve tried to use PLAY ORIGINAL QUALITY but that doesn’t work. Even though all my movies are in 1080p. They play in 1080p when I view them on my Mac Pro (where the files are stored) I’m using direct play method. The apple TV and Mac Pro are connected via WIFI and I have a 400Mbps connection. The videos are H.264.

Any suggestions??

In the Plex app on your Apple TV, what are you Video-related settings?

  • Home Streaming
  • Allow Direct Play
  • Display Type

Are you using the Enhanced Player?

Home Streaming - maximum
Internet Streaming - maximum
Allow Direct Play - On
Use Enhanced Video Player - Off

What is display type? I don’t see that option

Using the enhanced player will probably be the easiest fix, is there a reason you’re not using it?

Are you using subtitles at all?

Also, strangely, if you’re not using the enhanced player, try turning Direct Play OFF and see if that works.

I will try those things. I am not using subtitles though the files are encoded with them if I chose to use.

Turning on Enhanced Video Player worked. thanks a lot. Though I don’t quite understand why I have to turn that on when the source file is 1080p and the ATV is already capable of playing that quality.

I suspect it’s a bug when Direct Play is enabled and you’re not using the Enhanced Player; however, the Enhanced Player will play a lot more formats without transcoding so unless you run into an odd situation (or don’t have Plex Pass), then I recommend folks use it instead.

I have this same problem. I can play Plex directly on from my smart TV in 1080p, but it will not play anything other than 720p when using the app on the Apple TV 4K. I am using the enhanced player as well.

Are you using the Enhanced player?

Please post your Video Settings from the Plex App.

Then during playback on the Apple TV, use a web browser on your computer and go to https://app.plex.tv/desktop and click on Settings.

On the left under Server, click on Dashboard and the post a screenshot of the Now Playing section (above the graphs).
