So I’m still having problems with getting direct play to work with my AppleTV. This behavior started in the middle of September (after either an update to the AppleTV Plex client software or the Plex media server for macOS). I posted about this a few weeks ago hoping someone with more knowledge than myself would be able to point me in the right direction. Unfortunately, I only got comments from other users having a similar problem. I eventually gave up and was hoping it would be addressed in an update because others were also having a similar problem. Unfortunately the issue is still occurring and I have no idea why or how to fix it. Before September, direct play used to work perfectly. I didn’t change my media that used to work fine using direct play, so the only conclusion I can come up with is that it has something to do with the software. I also apologize if this has been addressed recently. I did do a few searches on the forums and didn’t come across any, but if I missed it just point me in the right direction. Thanks in advance for your willingness to help another plex user out.
With Direct Play ON
-
EVERY movie file in my library that includes a DTS soundtrack refuses to play. Under default settings, Plex chooses the best “compatible” soundtrack (AC3) to prevent any transcoding like it always has.
-
When I attempt to play these files on the AppleTV, Plex will display the “Apple loading circle” for approximately 20-30 seconds after which it will jump the will sit for about 20-30 seconds while displaying the “Apple Loading Circle” pictured below and then jump to the recap screen as if you have finished the movie and presents the user with the option to watch it again.

-
ONLY SOLUTION: The video will play if I select the “incompatible” soundtrack (DTS in my case) because that forces the server to transcode.
With Direct Play ON
- All files play, but they require transcoding.
Ideally, I just don’t want to use my CPU’s to transcode media that didn’t require it before. Thanks again for your help. I can provide logs if requested.
