Apple TV App not playing 5.1 audio music files anymore

Keeping this thread alive because it still doesn’t work. Please, Plex. Please.

It’s hard to believe it has been 2 weeks since the last post. We must stay vigilant.

It’s even harder to believe it’s been 20 months since you started this thread!

Almost. They have 2 weeks to fix it before the 20 month mark.

And maybe two candles soon… :candle: :candle:

Plex on PS5 plays surround albums. So at least that.

Really? But Sony software is such crap. I assume the interface is better than what’s on my PS3, but I would guess that it isn’t that much better.

The interface has improved marginally since the PS3 and PS4. There’s now a dedicated MEDIA tab so once you’re inside of that, it just shows you streaming apps you’ve downloaded. The new media remote control looks promising but I don’t have it to test. I disagree about the diss on the hardware front but agree that Sony has terrible interface design. See also: Sony A7R and A7S camera line.

I have no issue with their hardware. My TV is a 1080p 3D and it is still wonderful. The PS3’s I have (for ripping SACDs) are still alive; although on one I had to use a blow dryer to get it working again.

I got a Plex Pass —- just to play multichannel FLACS. Please oh please fix this! VLC sucks.

That’s why I got my PlexPass. I so regret it now because I could have paid monthly and then stopped until this was fixed. One user isn’t much leverage, but at least it would have felt like I had some.

Bruce - have you tried MRMC app? It’s a Kodi port, available for Apple TV OS.

It’s $6 bucks, it allows you to connect to your PMS and it supports gapless playback + Multichannel up to 7.1.

It’s not quite as nice as Plex but it works!

I tried the free version and it didn’t work. I’m so tired of paying for software that doesn’t do what I want. I’d gladly pay them if I could see it perform.

Agreed. I bought a few more expensive apps that did not work…

MRMC does… FWIW

Okay, for 7 bucks… It works if I use the Plex database with it, but a standard DNLA link gives me errors. I have to figure out where the log file is located because there isn’t much of an error message. Also, it can’t read the files inside the Plex main menu (recent additions to music), so I have to go a different route. Not nearly as clean as Plex. Still need to do some testing and decide whether to use it versus JRiver which just works but doesn’t have an ATV app. First world problems I suppose. Thanks for pushing me.

Agreed not as “clean” for sure… but for the time being, I am loving the fact that it just works… after spending way too much time trying to find something that would. Kodi seems like another option but the sideloading MAC requirement (don’t have a MAC) was too big a lift for me wrt going in that direction. Sorry I can’t help with the DLNA issue. Curious tho…

Why use DLNA over just PMS? Or have you found that to be a better way to connect to PMS?

The DLNA was just me trying out different options. I have some stereo music that I thought I’d try and get to as well. I pulled it from Plex because it was so large (somewhere around 100k songs) that Plex would take forever to update the folder. More annoying is the fact that the “Recently Added Music” section on the front page doesn’t work. I have to go into the actual music “folder”. The album I wanted to listen to was sitting right in front of me and I couldn’t get to it. Otherwise, it seems to work. I just need to spend more time with it. JRiver’s phone interface is looking pretty good right now though. I can fly through the list of artists much faster than on MrMC. But MrMC is more convenient, so there’s that.

After the last exchanges between hsvendblad and bruceagreenberg, I bought (7,99 € in France) and installed MrMC on my ATV. Everything is played in stereo, only in stereo, no multichannel sound !! Disappointment. MrMC straight to the trash.

Wait! Wait! We said it wasn’t a great program. You need to tell it you are in 5.1 or whatever. Go to audio playback in the settings and give it your channel configuration. Then it will play multi channel.

Yes, it’s true, it’s already much better after having done that! Thank you.
