Apple TV App not playing 5.1 audio music files anymore

This thread is 25 days away from our 2 year anniversary. Any ideas on how to celebrate?

Maybe it’s time to take our bug report and two years of frustration outside the garden walls of this forum?

Somewhere you have in mind?

Picking the thread from where I left it, to answer bruce, I wanted to provide you the files I created with Audacity, but since they were in Italian (my voice saying ā€œFront Leftā€ ā€œFront Rightā€ etc.) I rebuilt it in English (following exactly the same procedure) and, don’t ask me why, but now it works, meaning that the right channel goes correctly in the right speaker and not in the central one.
I exported the result in 3 different track types (AC3, FLAC and OGG) plus I added the AC3 version to a black screen to prove that as audio track of a video, it works as it is meant to (but you already knew this).
The audio tracks play all in a slight different way, either way none of them plays correctly the 5.1 (aside of the video one).

Have a great day
Marco
Hi-Fi Tests.zip (7.1 MB)

Marco, I ran the FLAC track and it played the left and right front speakers only, which is pretty much what I expected. It ran perfectly on the web app though. Thanks for making that file. I may use it the next time I’m making a multi channel setlist. It would be a fun interruption.

It was a pleasure.
Just: what do you mean by ā€œweb appā€?
Maybe I’m missing something: do you have some device connected to the 5.1 receiver that can open a browser and call Plex from web?

Cheers
Marco

I have a 6 channel audio card in my computer with a 5.1 speaker system hooked up. Chrome can play multi channel if you give it the right settings. So, I was playing it on my computer using Plex’s web app in Chrome.

Happy 2nd Anniversary everyone! I started this thread 2 years ago today. So, let’s see… What’s the gift for a second anniversary? Oh yeah, Cotton. Usually you buy bedding. And wouldn’t that be great if we could put this thread to bed. So… we need a speech. Anyone? @DaveBinM , how about a speech?

Meanwhile, there’s ice cream and cake out in the back. Help yourself.

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!!
I just hope we won’t need to wait for 5.1 years!

Thank God we’re not talking about Atmos. That could be another 30 or more years. How many speakers does that format support?

Hey everybody, I’m new here! Been working on my rpi 4 Plex server for the past few months and am the (almost) happy owner of a new 4K Apple TV! Was hoping that moving over to the tvOS platform would mean Plex would function better than my webOS LG OLED TV’s Plex app, but I’m guessing you know why I’ve found myself here in this thread!!

Does @DaveBinM have an update so that I can decide whether or not to return this ATV and save myself the $200?

Well, on the plus side, we now have Atmos albums available to stream via Apple Music. Have tested this on the AppleTV and it works well! But still waiting, waiting, waiting, on Plex to fix whatever got broken.

It’s been two years now, with no sign of movement on Plex’s part. I would love to tell you, just wait a little. But I can’t. :frowning:

I don’t have any further news at this time, I’m afraid.

25 months now. At 26 it will have to go get its own insurance (that’s a U.S. insurance joke). Meanwhile, Steven Wilson has done it again. His re-mix of Gentle Giant’s Free Hand is nothing short of amazing. If only we could listen to it using Plex.

Well I spent half a day trying to get either Emby or Plex to properly play 5.1 audio on my AppleTV. I then found this amazing thread!

As suggested, I tried VLC and it works perfectly albeit with a crappy user interface.

I tried MrMC Lite and was able to turn on the plex extension, select the Plex client as a service, and set the number of audio output channels to 5.1
I selected a song to play and at first I thought it was working. But I quickly realized that the ā€œmultichannel stereoā€ output on my receiver had been selected and I was hearing simulated multichannel audio. This was confirmed when I set the audio output on my receiver to Pure Direct and I was clearly only getting two channel output.

Anyone know if I’m doing anything wrong with MrMC? As far as I can tell, the Lite version just limits the number of items from your library that are displayed to seven and so purchasing the full version won’t help.

I’d really like to get MrMC working simply because the user interface is better than VLC (which certainly does work)

Thanks!

Honestly, I gave up on MrMC. It showed signs of working, but I kept having problems with it seeing my files or when I logged it into Plex it wouldn’t see my music folder. I tried placing files in a share. It got to the folders but didn’t see files. I tried FLAC, DTS Wav and Lossy Apple files. It couldn’t see any of them. I threw files into Dropbox, it wouldn’t even begin to try and login. Sorry.

No worries, thanks for replying. It is mind boggling to me that the folks at Plex haven’t addressed this issue after two years!

The way I see it, everyone except VLC used the standard audio engine that Apple offered. When they changed that, it messed everyone up and it must involve a lot of work to build your own audio engine, which is why no one has done it. It sucks, but it is just business. If someone builds a Plex replacement with its own audio engine and it has a reasonable interface, I’ll dump Plex right away.
