Apple TV App not playing 5.1 audio music files anymore

@bruceagreenberg is basically right. Getting 5.1 support basically means a major upgrade in the audio player is needed. And then, work on top of that to make 5.1 work.

That major upgrade is already being rolled out on Android (without 5.1 support AFAIK) after a lot of work and testing. The problem is this major upgrade doesn’t only affect this bug, affects many things. Which means it might fix this bug, and introduce other new bugs that affect many more people.

The iOS/tvOS team is waiting for them to confirm everything is stable, and then we will start doing the same transition, where we will probably find bugs exclusive to our platforms. After that, at some point, we will tackle this issue. But as @bruceagreenberg said we don’t have enough resources and we have another ton of work to do in other areas of the app.

So I can promise you we are keeping an eye on this, I just can’t give you a date when it will be fixed.

We’re really sorry about this problem. Thanks for your patience.

Thank you @sergiou87 for the update. It makes the wait a lot easier when we hear from the team occasionally. I’d promise not to get snarky in the future, but we do have that 1 year anniversary coming up in a few months and I’m not going to be able to resist.

Don’t worry, we totally understand. We are also users of other services and apps with longstanding bugs, so we get why it’s so frustrating for you

Thank you for your understanding!

Glad to hear it’s getting some more attention. Been a long time coming!

2.15 just came out. No expectations and therefore no disappointment.

I hope all of the Plex guys are programming safely.

Version 2.16 now available… Nothing for us!!!

As mentioned here:

the upgrade will first roll out to Android and then come to iOS/tvOS. Thanks for your patience, and once it’s released, it’ll be noted in the release notes.

So it seems that the update for iOS/tvOS is in the pipes. The question now is: how long are the pipes?

As long as they’ve laid the pipe, I don’t care how long. Better than being lost in the ether.

Wow… Where did the last 2 weeks go? Well, no news is… no news.

Version 2.17 is now available…
… OK ! And about 5.1 bug ???

Not on the list. :frowning:

Oh boy… discovered this just after buying plex pass recently. Hope plex prioritizes this fix soon.

Well, it’s only been 11 months. So…

… And a few more days for a happy birthday :birthday:

I know! I was planning a big party where we all get together at Plex headquarters with signs and such. Unfortunately, with the “shelter at home” rules, it had to be cancelled. Maybe for the second anniversary.

Hopefully the Plexamp 5.1 FLAC problem is the same as ours - in March the CTO said “We’ll be resolving this in the future” in the Plexamp Does Not Play FLAC 5.1 thread.

I’m experiencing the same issue and frustration with Plex on a Nvidia Shield. Movies are playing awesome with full support for all audio formats bitstreamed to my amplifier. Love it.

Seems that music has always been a secondary function of Plex unfortunately. Gapless playback took forever to sort out. Finally had my cake and was eating it too until this issue arose with 5.1 audio.

After looking at all my options for streaming my multichannel FLAC files to my receiver, I have gone back to KODI. Gah. Roon was an option I considered until I saw the price of admission. No thanks.

I’ve been living with JRiver, which I like, but I really want an app on my ATV. I haven’t checked out Emby in a while. Maybe I’ll look at that again.
