Apple TV, HDHomeRun Extend Direct Play

I have an Apple TV 4 and an underpowered (Atom-based) Plex Media Server

If I pick up an HDHomeRun Extend (which transcodes DVB-T to x.264 on the fly), will I be able to Direct Play Live TV and TV Recorded with Plex DVR? My server even struggles to transcode audio on the fly, so Direct Play compatibility is important

There seem to be various conflicting threads on the forum, so I’m looking for the current state as of today

Thanks!

James

Thanks. For Movies I always pre-optimize to the iOS custom profile and it works great.

Of course this won’t work for live broadcast - which is why I’m looking for confirmation on the HDHomeRun. I’m aware that H.264/AAC should work fine with the Apple TV 4, but I’ve had trouble with bitrates in the past - so looking for 100% confirmation before I throw money down for the HDHomeRun

The ATV4 cannot direct play TS files. If the streams inside are compatible it will “direct stream” which does use the transcoder, but is not a transcode in the sense of changing the video or audio

Got it - so in the best case I will see a live remux, but no transcoding of audio or video content?

You may want to check out this post. Plex will transcode if your source is interlaced and you are using the “Heavy” or higher profiles.

The EXTEND does not support DVB. It is an ATSC-only model. Most DVB transmissions are already in H264.
