Apple TV HEVC

Kinda new here but I haven't seen much about this anywhere. I'm streaming a H.265 movie in mkv to my ATV via Openplex on my mac. When I open plex activity, it says it is direct playing. This doesn't make sense, because mkv containers are usually direct stream. Which leads me to think it has already been transcoded. I was unable to find a transcodes file as instructed on the support website.

So my questions is, is it really direct streaming, or has it already been transcoded? The codec is listed as h265/hevc on the pre-play screen, and I don't really notice any loss in quality from the hevc source.

Not looking for any troubleshooting or anything, just a general question if anyone knows or has the same situation.

Don't know where in the world OpenPlex would get it's knowledge. Check the PMS activity/logs - this should give you a correct indication about the transcoder status.

OpenPlex streams video now?!?   :o

PlexConnect Like the forum title says does all the magic. OpenPlex for OS X only just provides a GUI to install PlexConnect.

Which is why thread is under plexconnect not openplex  ;)

if you want to know whether your video has been decoded or not, then you can try this MediaInfo. The mkv must has encoded your H.265/HEVC videos
