Hi all, I’m sure this is something basic but couldn’t find an answer via search. I have Plex server on Windows streaming to my LG 2016 TV. I noticed that an MKV file containing h265 video is transcoded to h264, but if I remux the file to an MP4 and copy the video/audio (not re-encoding it), it will now direct play.
I was thinking it should be direct streaming in these cases? If so, what’s the best way to figure out why? Thanks!
Learn to convert your files to MP4 and stop using MKV. MP4 are a lot more compatible with more devices including your TV. At present you can’t use MKV with HEVC on your TV.
Thanks, I had read that page before but honestly, I’m still unsure (academically) why an mkv with HEVC (1080p) can’t be direct streamed. (I get why direct play wouldn’t work if the container is not supported.) There’s obviously a reason, I’m just curious to learn more.
