AppleTV App and Managed Users

I provide one family member with access to my Plex Library and have configured her as a managed user in my PMS. I then assigned a 4 digit code to enter as that user. This works fine except for a few things:

  1. In AppleTV’s Plex app, there’s no way for her to login as her, only the super user account (i.e. me) via my master Plex login and password.

  2. One you’ve linked your TV and signed in as the super user, there is no option to choose which user you wish to view content from (i.e. like choosing the correct user account from the web app and entering the 4 digit code).

The solution, as I see it, would be:

Anyone should be able to create their own user/pass and then through PMS I should be able to add a user account that I give specific access to. That way when they go to link their AppleTV app, they would login as themselves and see a list of servers that they have access to. This also eliminates the security risk of providing others the super user login/pass.

For example, my family member happen to have their own PMS running on their laptop for various tutorials and things they need access to at all times. But when they are connected to the Internet at a high speed and wish to share my Library with the access I have given them, they should be able to select something like “Switch Server” and then select which server they wish to access.

Am I missing something or is this a really obvious oversight that needs to be addressed.

At the top of the Plex for Apple TV main navigation you should see the Plex logo and your account name. Clicking on that will bring up the dialog to switch the user. Also… with multiple users in your Plex Home and automatic sign-in disabled, the user selection should actually come up whenever you open the app.

As for #1+2 – that’s the intended behavior. Managed users don’t have their own account, they’re part of yours. Therefore you’re the one to sign them into a new account and subsequently let them switch to their managed user.

Thank you for the quick response. Everything worked. I set a pin for the user and even though auto sign in was disabled in PMS, it was apparently enabled in her AppleTV app so it auto signed her in as me. So, we switched users per your instructions and she was able to sign in as her and see what I had given her access to.

The only bug we found was with regards to the sidebar. It seems that unless you customize what you want upon first sign in, you cannot select anything but the libraries themselves to unpin from the sidebar. This only occurs when signed in as the managed user.

To resolve, I had her click on the dots next to Home and then choose to set to default so she got the menu again and could customize her screen. Now when she finished that, she sees the More option in the sidebar and things work as they should.

Anyway, all is well. A bit cumbersome but it all works, and that’s the goal. Thanks again!

Automatic sign-in is a per-client setting. The one you refer to as “PMS” is for the Plex Web player.
