Are there any risks to enabling Remote Access to my PleX Server?

I’ve recently moved out of my parents house and taken my server with me, however I still want them to be able to use it. Before I share it with them and enable Remote Access, I wanted to see if anybody here has any advice about any possible risks (security or otherwise) and if so what some good solutions are for dealing with those? Thanks in advance

There’s a certain security aspect to it.
If you open your Plex Media Server to the outside, it’s available to the outside – even if access is restricted for certain users, others might attempt to access that open service (not necessarily for the sake of watching your content but e.g. in an attempt to hijack things).

That being said… setting up remote access is fairly safe but you should do your remote setup configuration knowingly.

Personally I prefer creating a manual port forward in my router over having apps in my network open things up themselves. This way I can also obscure my footprint as I can use a non-standard port (so attackers cannot immediately conclude that Plex is running on my end of that connection).

In the recent past there’s been issues where users ran a 3rd party software to monitor their Plex Media Server. For that software to properly work they were asked to enter their Plex token (“security identifier”) – with that, the app can access information from Plex. The issue was not so much with that functionality but that users could make that 3rd party app remotely available without securing it (so an attacker could get the Plex Token from that 3rd party app and then attack / hijack your server).
Which brings us back to “know what you’re doing”
