I installed Plex on 218play, playback works without problems but I have not done serious tests.
My problem is that the NAS works with two disks that work separately and installing PLEX on volume 1 I can no longer access volume 2 from the file manager.
Now I can’t launch Plex “launch of package assistance failed”
Waiting anxiously for the formal full release, though the beta/alpha version is not working on the apple tv 4k.
Thanks.
If I get an updated build this week (which should have the tvOS fix in it, I will drop it in here and we’ll find out but remember, what you’re experiencing is common to all of PMS and, for my purposes here, out of scope with our testing.
Have you tried all the crazy things you wouldn’t normally do?
Well, on my MacOS PMS it works fine , its with the synologic PMS that is not working.
Not sure what you mean by crazy things, but installing, stoping, restarting, changing directories of shares, adding shares, channels, etc… all seemed to work find.
Thanks,
I don’t understand the relevance of MacOS to this in the slightest.
I am asking to test PMS running on an ARMv8 (RealTek CPU) based Synology or QNAP.
If the server is running elsewhere, it’s out of scope for this task
I think you misunderstood me. I stated that it works on my macOS because I understood from your message that it doesn’t work on all PMS platforms as well.
The posts here that I mentioned are only related to PMS on my synologic.
Thanks.
Thanks. So it works playing to a MacOS player. Gotcha!
Hi,
@ChuckPa Thanks for you and your team’s work on getting this ready for ARMv8
I can happily report success on my DS118 : DirectPlay to Xbox One S and Android TV box, 1080p H.264 - 12 Mbps, Transcode DCA -> AAC
20Mbps jellyfish HD H.264 & HEVC files play without problems. I can do additional testing if needed.
Regards
Hey all,
I’ve just downloaded PMS on my DS218, but something seems not right.
Installation and setup was fine, but when playing a 4K HEVC movie, it just keeps buffering on my LG TV, using Plex app.
But if I play the same movie directly on my TV via DLNA, it works just fine. No buffering at all.
It seems to me that maybe is not using Direct Play?
Cheers,
tgodinho
Please test anything and everything you can within the known limits of what the ARMv8 can do or is reasonable to expect. I would like to have a clear profiling of the CPU’s capabilities when completed here. It will make creation of the NAS compatibility guide entries much easier.
It should DirectPlay anything you can throw at it because it’s DirectPlay.
It should also be able to handle audio conversion (DirectStream) of any H.264 you give it to up to about 20-25 Mbps (YMMV)
None of the ARMv8, just like all the Intel CPUs lower than a -7700 series can even decode HEVC . The -7700 series needs hardware transcoding to actually decode it. The CPU will can’t do it alone.
Expecting HEVC processing, other than DirectPlay, isn’t possible.
If you have HEVC, and can’t DirectPlay, even to the Plex app, it’s unfortunately “game over” . I thought I had explained the limitations in the main post. If I didn’t, thanks for bringing it up . I’ll make sure to add it.
Ok, got it now. Thanks for the response.
So that means that, when I’m using DLNA, the TV is transcoding the video, that’s why it works fine. That’s it?
Also, any plans for having hardware transcoding working on WebOS?
Cheers
Just thought I’d chime in with some positive feedback here:
I have it working on DS218Play. In addition to setting permissions to the Plex share, I had to do a couple of restarts, restart the software and disable the firewall in order to get it through to the initial setup (I re-enabled the firewall after setting allow rules on port 32400 ). After that, though, it seems to be working okay with the Windows store Plex Media Player and on iPad/Android. Nice work guys!
When you’re using DLNA, there is no transcoding of video. It’s working because the TV can accept the video “As-is” . It may/may not be able to accept the audio but PMS is taking care of that. The ARM CPU can handle that pretty easily.
WebOS? Isn’t that the LG TV’s resident OS? If so, you’ll only need the Plex player app for LG. This is the server side of the software
But I’m not even using PMS when using it via DLNA. I’m just using Synology Media Server. So LG TV accepts both video (h265) and audio (7.1).
Maybe I wasn’t clear enough. My question is, when can I have the h265 videos played properly via Plex app. It’s not a problem on either NAS or TV side, because it works smoothly with Synology Media Server + LG DLNA. So I’m assuming that Plex app is trying to transcoding something that doesn’t need to be transcoded in the first place?
Ah, thank you for clarifying. That is an entirely different question. You need to ask about that for the players. What we’re doing here is constrained to the server only
To help you phrase your question, which they will want to know, is ask and include the model and firmware version of your TV,
"Is DirectPlay of H.265 (HEVC) and 7.1 (HD) audio supported for LG WebOS (firmware version) ? "
If you don’t get any answers (other folks might know already) , Please let me know and I’ll track down one of the team members.
Have watched some more movies via web player. Résultats are successful on DS118 :
Transcode, 1080p H.264 (4 Mbps) -> 720p H.264 (2 Mbps), EAC-3 5.1 -> AAC
Transcode, 1080p H.264 (12 Mbps) -> 720p H.264 (2 Mbps), DCA 5.1 -> AAC

@ChuckPa
will you be notified when a new build will be available?
Hello,
Config : DS218play + DSM 6.2-23739 Update 2
Everything seems to work fine on the Media Server, I see all my librairies and can read them all from plex server on Synology admin pluggin.
Actually I have troubles with the Android app : I can see all my TV Shows (Séries in french) but I cannot see my movies (Films in french). The weirdest thing is that I can see the current movie which is playing at the Home of the app, play it on the app and do all normal stuffs.
But I still have this error page on the app when I try to see my movies library, which is saying my NAS is unavailable
Unfortunately, I can’t help with the Android app. I can only refer you to the Android app (Plex Players) section of the forum
I know of many issues with that app and that the team is going nearly crazy trying to fix them for their next update
