Artist tags and how artists show

Server Version#:1.24.0.4930
Player Version#:
I have “Prefer local metadata” set.

I’m seeing some screwy stuff regarding what is showing in my library for artists. For example, I have a boatload for Jaco Pastorious. I have most of it tagged with just him as both album artist and track artist. Some are tagged as his big band, some are tagged as him and significant other (e.g. Jaco Pastorious and Brian Melvin).

When I click on Jaco Pastorious in Plex browser I see only one album. Sure there are plenty others under him and many other artists. But it’s crazy. Where there is the one album under Jaco Pastorious there should be 29. If I click Jaco Pastorious and Brian Melvin I get so many of those albums that should be showing under just Jaco Pastorious., so many that are in no way associated with Brian Melvin. Same with other combinations of JP and other artist.

Worse, in Plexamp they are listed correctly! Makes no sense.

The band has to be the Album Artist (if the entry doesn’t exist, Plex will take the Artist).
The Artist is main the singer or the band if you don’t want to make a distinction.

(This come from a long use of Audiobooks in Plex where you really need to be precise to get the things correctly and have the narrator as the artist)

Thanks, but all do have the correct Album Artist in tags.

Subsonic does this correctly. Emby does this correctly.

Plex is making it hard for me to buy in.

It’s done the same thing for me - if I have albums by a solo artist and some albums where the name is that artist and something else (like, made-up example, U2 and U2 & Bob Dylan), it will mix them up and typically put a lot of the “solo” U2 albums with U2 & Bob Dylan.

In Plex, what I did that seemed to work is, for the “U2 & Bob Dylan” albums that should just be U2 albums, is I changed the Album Artist to something like U2ZZZ - just some junk characters at the end. That change seemed to work, and then I went to Artist → U2ZZZ and changed it to U2.

It was still finicky, if I recall correctly, but I did eventually get them separate.

There is, in my opinion, definitely something wrong in this situation.

Do you guys also have the proper settings in the Music Library :

i.e. the Prefer Local Metadata checked?

Thanks, but no way am I going to do that for every instance. Not when it’s fine in other server solutions.

Thanks for sticking with us! Can’t speak for eltigre, but as stated in my OP, I do.

I do, yes, and still have this problem. Not often, but yes.

Last thing then: I discovered that when Plex gets its metadata once, it is hard to change it, so it is best to remove the faulty album from Plex path, delete them in Plex (if you have deletion enabled or you will need to do a scan again without the files) then re-add them and scan.

Removing them from the path will allow Plex to delete the albums without actually deleting really your data you moved away.

Thanks, Ismelda. But that is simply too much work. So far I am happy with what Emby is doing. Actually, I am happiest with Subsonic but it has apparently been abandoned. Works just fine, great even, but I prefer to have a lively community which gives me confidence in further development (though Emby folks for years have been clamoring for an equalizer! :upside_down_face:). I am only concerned about audio. Infuse is so damn good for video.

Best!
