Atmos won´t work - Apple TV 4K (PMP) + Receiver Yamaha V583 (with Atmos) + Samsung 65" 4K HDR

Server Version#: 1.18.5.2309
Player Version#: 2.14 (tvOS)
Receiver: Yamaha V583 (Speaker setup: 5.1.2) - Atmos and DTS:X enabled
TV: Samsung 4K HDR - 65"

Since I bought my Home Theater system, I would like to enjoy Atmos contents, but it has bein frustrated. I have some media in Atmos TrueHD 7.1 format and DD+ too.
Apple TV is set to passthrough Audio to A/V, which is set to Straight.

When I try to watch one of these movies, A/V does not enable the Atmos speakers, and show decoder as PCM. If I want to enable those speakers, I need to change from straight to DTS, which I do not want to, once I have Atmos content.
I checked the the server and it is not transcoding the Audio. So I do not know why my receiver is not player Atmos option.

If I watch a Atmos movie in Netflix, it turns on Atmos and enables all speakers.

Can anyone help me discovering what I am doing wrong?

In a nutshell, AppleTV / tvoOS does not support real/actual Dolby Atmos.

What does work is Dolby Digital Plus with Atmos metadata extension

It does not support Dolby TrueHD with Atmos metadata extension

Thank you a lot for your time . I have read the topic you sent me, but I still have questions: I saw Plex on Apple TV 4K can convert to FLAC, and keep the 8 channels (7.1). My problem is, even converting, I am losing 2 channels, and having an output with 5.1. I am not hard core to have a lossless audio quality, but at least I would like to have the TrueHD converted to a format where I could enjoy all my speakers.

This is what I’ve got from PMS while running PMS on Apple TV:
Captura de Tela 2020-02-17 às 22.59.28

And this is what I’ve got while running Infuse on the same Apple TV:
Captura de Tela 2020-02-17 às 23.01.02

BOTH CASES, MY A/V shows PCM, and only enable 5.1 channels.

Infuse has licensed the TrueHD audio codec for Apple TV from Dolby, which is why they can decode it on device, and then output PCM. As we don’t have that license, we convert to either EAC3 or FLAC, depending on the player used.

The only mainstream device with hdaudio/truehd/atmos pass through is nvidia shield (plugged into av receiver, not tv).

Btw I have same receiver.

First, make sure the Enhanced (Experimental) Player is enabled in the Plex app on your Apple TV 4K.

Next, use these settings on your Apple TV:

Then be sure you have these settings on your Plex app:

And during playback you should see something like:

And this:

Ok, But even after Plex convertion, I lose 2 channels, and 2 speakers won´t work. That´s my main claim. I do not mind not having TrueHD, but I would like ti converted to a 7.1 channels output.

Finally I found someone with the same AVR  How many speakers do you use?
Do you use Nvidea Shield? And the Yamaha shows (enables) all speakers?

If Infuse is also only outputting 5.1 channels, when they’re decoding and outputting the PCM, as you mentioned before, then with two different apps from software decoding (by two different companies), it would lead me to believe that it’s not an app specific thing.

is your apple tv plugged into the TV or the receiver? it must be plugged into the receiver to get the pass through. TV will not pass through 7.1 sound.

mine is in 5.1.2 atmos mode. (it only shows atmos if atmos content is playing, the display will show dts/dd/dthd/etc)

yes I have shield and while certainly not perfect, I highly recommend them, they are the only solution for 4k/truehd/atmos direct play.

yes all speakers are enabled, I use ‘auto’ surround mode.

EArc is coming, the new Sony and 2020 Samsung QLED support eARC. Plex should consider being able to decode into formats supported by AppleTV. EArc will enable support for TrueHD from the TV app.

eARC will not help the Apple TV with TrueHD audio

Apple TV 4K does not support TrueHD. Only EAC3. I suggest spamming Apple’s Feedback portal.
