Hi all, I know Apple TV has limitations on the Atmos it supports. I do use a Shield for Atmos content but I hate Android TV. Is there any hope of offering Atmos support using the new Plex player that enabled directly play for a broader selection of formats?
The limitation is on Apple’s part, not Plex’s.
Agreed but so was the need to transcode a bunch of formats and now Plex has its own media player capable of direct play of a number of formats Apple’s player cannot. Can the same be done with Atmos support?
Nope.
Apple does not permit passthrough of TrueHD audio on the AppleTV. There is no way around this.
To add to this, see this post/FAQ from Infuse:
What about Dolby Atmos and DTS-X?
Unfortunately, Apple does not yet allow apps like Infuse to utilize Atmos for local content. However, we are working to encourage them to add more versatile options for Atmos and other audio codecs. We’re working to encourage Apple to add more flexible audio options, and more info on the ways you can help with this can be found here.
Apple already permits use of EAC3 + Atmos, since they use it for their own streaming service, as does Netflix, Amazon, and others. I do not know if the Plex app will passthrough EAC3 + Atmos.
Blu-ray discs have TrueHD + Atmos, which is what Apple blocks.
AFAIK, the only off the shelf streaming box that passes TrueHD + Atmos is the Shield.
You can also run PMP on a Windows PC. PMP on a Mac will not pass TrueHD due to Apple restrictions.
Infuse transcodes the TrueHD or DTS-HD MA 7.1 to FLAC 7.1 on the AppleTV.
If they can do this to mislead the Apple limitations, why can’t Plex do that (for TrueHD and for Atmos)?
Seems like a nice way around it?
You just agreed in another thread:
First one, TrueHD 7.1. Tautulli reports it is transcoding to FLAC 7.1, Receiver sees 7 channels + LFE.
(Perhaps a timing issue in you posts
)
I guess Plex has a more honest marketing department. ![]()
Note that OP asked about Atmos support.
When converting TrueHD + Atmos to another audio format the Atmos information is lost.
Or the client app of Infuse does more transcoding then Plex does? Nothing wrong with supporting more formats than Apple supports I guess?
Ah, alright! I did not know that the Atmos information could not be included in, for example, FLAC.
You are absolutely right! I guess I was confused for a while between TrueHD and DTS-HD.
TrueHD is transcoded, DTS-HD is not indeed ![]()
I have one other strange thing happening:
When Plex converts TrueHD 7.1 to FLAC 7.1, the surrounds channels and rear surround channels get switched… Anyone knowing a fix? (except switching the cables, since all other apps don’t have this problem (for example, Infuse))
Not focussed on Amos specifically, but hoping to find a solution here
