When will Plex support atsc3?
I can view on HDHomeRun, but I cannot map those channels on Plex Live TV
For various reasons, chief among them Plex’s lack of support for the Dolby AC-4 audio codec and the proliferation of DRM encryption by broadcasters of their ATSC 3.0 channels, it’s going to be an uphill battle for support to be implemented in Plex. There’s a rather protracted discussion of the first issue here (and some side discussion of the second):
Check out this project for a workaround for the first issue (the first fork is interesting as well as it has been updated more recently):
As for the second issue, that is likely never to be tackled by Plex due to the onerous requirements to get anything certified to decode DRM encryption in the ATSC 3.0 environment. SiliconDust themselves haven’t yet cracked that nut as their products are gateway devices and the A3SA just isn’t playing ball. More on that here:
Could this be a start? Might not matter for me since only 2 out of 7 stations aren’t DRM
No.
Today’s announcement has nothing to do with ATSC 3.0 / DRM / AC-4 audio.
Plex added the capability to transcode to HEVC video. Previously, Plex transcoded only to H.264.
Announcement: HEVC Encoding (Experimental) Public Release
I watched my working ATSC3 channels go from 4/6 working, to 3/6 working to 0/6 working due to DRM.
There is no reason for Plex to spend engineering hours on this. ATSC3 is dead.
