I have this vauge memory that there is a bitrate cap with what the ATV3 can handle. Am I Completely wrong? 1080p x264 coded video files, will it play or will plex media server transcode it on the fly?
Atv3 is capable of h.264 level 4.0 (1080p@20 mbps). Plex will trancode downwards if needed, but cpu power higher than 2000 passmark may be needed

Help an ignorant fella out. Is there anyway to 'know' if my P server is transcoding the material? What I'm trying to say is. What if I spend time creating a 1080p library, but the server downscales the movie without me really knowing. Could you - sort of - disable the whole transcode option, so I get a 'cant play' message if the ATV3 cant play it?
PlexConnect allows you to force Direct Play. Click trailers (the hijacked app) in the TV, go to settings, and change the parameter. In such circumstances PMS will neither trancode nor Direct Stream. If the file can't play you will get an error message instead of going into transcoding / Direct Stream.
