Audio Books

Audio books are now mostly supported.

It seems to have finally gotten the attention of the developers and we even have one making comments about it. To sum it up, you can turn on the remembering of position in the advanced tab but it still marks complete at 90%. They are aware of that and working on it.

I wouldn’t say “mostly supported,” unless your audiobooks are in single files. If they are downloaded from something like audible.com, that may be how they are, but if your audiobooks are ripped from CDs, they are typically broken up into dozens of short files. This new feature is only one step toward full support of audiobooks. It needs to not only remember its place in the track, but which track, and we need gapless playback.

Personally, I’m a bigger fan of radio drama, but the issue remains the same. Until there is a mechanism for remembering where you left off in a whole set of files, it’s not quite there. This is a nice first step.

Is there an update on full audiobook support? I see threads for years ago, and one from 10 months ago from the plex admins saying audiobook support is coming. As of now it’s a hack or work around, definitely not something that is supported.

Plex doesn’t have support for m4b chapter marks, nor is there an audiobook-specific metadata agent or library, but they HAVE added “Store Track Progress” to the advanced tab of Music libraries.

Storing/syncing track progress really is the key, as now you don’t need a video-related workaround to get audiobooks to remember where you were. However, as m4b chapter marks don’t work, you’ll need to split books into multiple files to get the next/prev track buttons to work properly.

I’m excited, and have actually cracked my own and my parents’ entire audible libraries for use in Plex. (Before an admin brings the hammer on me for saying that, just to be clear, that’s not illegal.)

I recommend inAudible for chapter-splitting. It works really well for me, and I’m really picky about making sure each track is split at actual chapter breaks.

+1 for Audiobook support. Thanks

+1 for audiobook support! I think about this everyday. Sure, CloudBeats for iOS works great for access to my audiobook library, but it doesn’t make it user friendly for the rest of my family.

So I decided to create a new music library with that save progress option turned on, and actually it is working really well. I now have a library with my audiobooks in it. It recognizes both my MP3 audiobooks and my m4b audiobooks and uses my imbedded meta data (that I manage with iTunes). Totally what I was looking for!

I am using Booksonic as a temp replacement for plex for audiobooks. You have to install a server(just like plex) found at http://booksonic.org/. After you install the server you will need point it to where you keep your book and install the android app. After that it just acts like a big audiobook library on your phone.
It has bookmarks, podcasts, and according to the app author it will have variable playback soon.

Adding another +1 for Bookmarks and AudioBook support. This is the only way I can see to consolidate my huge library into a multi-platform server.

Hello All,

I use booksonic for audiobooks, but I decided to import my books into the plex. My books are convert to mp3 and the plex server is recognizing them audio files. The cover art for the book is a hit and miss, if the cover art dont work save the image from audible as a jpeg and call it cover in its own folder. Plex will remember the last location and and i also sync it to a mobile and test it that way, it remembered the last location. Seems like a lot of work but for me, just use booksonic, i did it to allow my plex friends that use iphones instead of android.

+1 for audiobook support.

Not sure if there is a official list of features requested for audiobook support but this is what I would like to see. I am making this list for audiobook/podcast/radio drama as they are all similar to me. This list is not ordered in any specific order.

Listened / Unlistened Just like videos Mark what files have not been listened to. This will be very beneficial when there are multifile books. You would then be able to hit play on the “album” / book and it start one the correct file instead of having to remember what file you are currently on.

**Bookmarks ** Having the ability to quickly jump to a favorite part or a part you wish you register.

Sleep Timer I sometimes listen to books going to sleep and don’t like to wake up to the book being done.

Variable Speed Playback Sometimes it is nice to slow down a action scene or speed up a slow reader.

m4b Chapter Support Full support of this file type.

Im sure there are some points I am missing. What do you guys think?

I found where this setting is, but when once I click the box to turn “store track progress” on, I press “Save” and then get the message that “your changes could not be saved”. I tried it multiple times and received the same message. Any advice or tips?

Okay I got it to save when I did it from another computer’s browser. However, audiobooks are still not saving track location. Do I need to do something else to force the change or refresh and push the setting?

When you resume you have to resume the track you were listening to not the album.

I am sure you make the same mistake as I. When you start stop playing a “book” using the Button on the “Album” than the track position is not stored recovered. But if you start stop playing the individual track within the “Album” Plex is storing the position.

In my case where I have simply created big “mp3” files and not splitting in into individual mp3 files it works fine and is ok for me.

My audiobooks only have one track in them. All of my tracks are combined into one “file” through Audiobook Builder.

I think I see what you mean now. Even though the album only has one track, the “page” still has two buttons to click–one for the “album” and one for the one “track”. I’ll continue experimenting to see if this seems to work consistently.

Is there an up-to-date wiki or something that explains how much audiobooks are or are not supported? File formats (and what works best)?

I have not seen one. I do use it though and it works alright. Mp3 is
supported I have had hit or miss luck with m4b. I merge books into one mp3
per file. Some people organize different than I do but I have

Artist = Series
Album = book title
Record label = Author
Review = book summary
Track Artist = narrator

This lets me view everything I would want. I can go to a series say Harry
Potter. See the book I want to listen to, Goblet of Fire, and then pick the
narrator that I want to listen to.

Major things missing.

Current album position (it keeps track position 1:05:53 of 18:03:24) but
not track (track 3 of 25)
Bookmarks
M4b support
Go to point
Play speed
Sleep timer

And some more I have a post in this thread that goes through each feature I
would like.
