Something I would find useful is caching of recently played music. Perhaps this would be useful for video, but music is my use case. The feature would work something like this:
There would be a setting to turn caching on and off
There would be a setting to set the size of the cache
Newly played items would be added to the cache
Less recently played items would be automatically removed
Up for discussion would be the default settings for off/on and size. Perhaps “off” since that maintains current behavior.
I find that I tend to get interested in an album or a few tracks and play them a lot for a while, then move on to something else. This would essentially sync automatically the things I’m currently listening to without having to mess with explicitly syncing content and then removing it when I think I’m done. The result would be reduced mobile data usage and avoiding pauses in mobile dead spots.
Sorry if this is a duplicate. I searched for a while but didn’t find anything similar.
Yes! This is one reason why I don’t use Plex for music. The Android SubSonic client DSub is amazing at this. Tell it here’s 5gb of cache on my sdcard, cache recently played files, oh, and when you’re on wi-fi, cache recently added music automatically. That way you have it when you go. It also deletes music out of the cache based on last-played date. Also has different settings for on mobile (cache 1 song ahead in current playlist) or on wi-fi (cache unlimited etc). Plex is CLOSE to being usable for music, but is not quite there yet.
Before using Plex, I used to listen music with Audio Station by synology that is caching automatically the axactly same way you describe.
You don’t have to think in advance about what music to sync before a travel and can retrieve most listend music.

That’s perfect. If the Plex client could work like this that would be great.
I see that this is a request made over a year ago, but how can this be added to the list for points so it can get implemented? iBroadcast does this and it works well, when you play a song on the mobile app it just starts to download and cache the song, then it will start caching the next song after it, and so on, of course there is some much allotted space for the cache, but this setting is within the mobile app. If you logout of the mobile app, or remove the app all of the cached files are removed, but I like the above idea “It also deletes music out of the cache based on last-played date.”
