Android: Music App

I was trying to use Plex Music for a week instead of Google Music/Spotify and here are the few things I think are wrong with it and would like to see addressed. Anyone agree?

  • Sync v2.0 (specifically Playlist syncing)
  • Music widget for the home screen
  • Automatic play/pause even if app was closed (Google Music stays persistent if it was the last bluetooth streaming service when reconnecting to a car radio as an example)
  • Auto play after taking a call in the car or via bluetooth headset
  • Tapping a song to play does not erase the queue automatically. Either a prompt to erase, or auto inserting it in the queue is ideal (like Google Music again)

Those were a few of the notable issues I had when trying to make it my main service for a week. Overall, it is great to have my own music library and I love that! However, I like Google Music for simplicity, and Plex can’t quite match it yet. I think Sync v2.0 will help a lot (in my case), but with a few additions, I think Plex Music could be wonderful!

This would be such a HUGE improvement, as so many people would benefit from it.

I’d like to add feature parity with search on Plex Web - especially searching for track names.
The absence of this is the reason I don’t use Plex as my main music app on the go.

Hey what about:

  1. Adding quality/bitrate control for mobile streaming
  2. Caching while playing, helps streaming music with unstable mobile signal

I am disappointed that i have paid plex and i cant really use it daily for music because of the two lacking features, i have to use Subsonic!

Caching while playing is HUGE, and I totally agree. Google Music plays like it’s all downloaded. Never an issue streaming it. Plex stutters a ton. Sync v2.0 would address that for me, but not if I wanted to listen to something not synced, so I agree.

You’re right in regards to searching track names. I had tried but always thought it was a bad connection or I spelled something wrong or didn’t have the track. Now I know it’s that it is not searching!

Can we PLEASE get Sync v2.0! I have a 128gb memory card, and would frankly buy a 256gb card to just carry all my music and then caching and streaming and junk wouldn’t even matter!

I’ll say this, streaming has improved! But we still need to sync a whole playlist!

How about offline shuffle? Lol

Got an answer about the playlist syncing and they state (as of yesterday) that it is still being developed but taking longer than expected…(DUH, but I appreciated the update) but how in the world is not-searching-for-a-song-title still not a thing? That is almost inexcusable honestly.

I just started using Plex instead of Kodi/Subsonic and was really happy how well it works with a large music library. The Chrome App and FireTV App are working great. Unfortunately I had to learn that the Plex Android App is not working well over mobile networks for me. I get large moments of silence between songs. Please, at least start buffering the next song of the queue while the current song is playing.

I also experienced this recently. I always sync my music to be able to play directly from the device. However, when I’m on the go and start playing songs from the device itself I get a long time of silence every 2 or 3 songs. I then have to go into the app and hit play or next to resume playing. Typically I see that this produces network traffic, even though the songs are already on the device. This is probably just a request for meta data, but it causes the playback to pause when on very bad mobile network.

I hope Plex continues to extend their support for offline play and some day even sync artwork and lyrics, so the app never has to launch a request when playing offline content (except status updates, when connected to WiFi).
Enable/Disable Airplane mode solves this problem, but is just plain annoying.

Doesn’t even need to be a separate app, music in Plex, especially Android, is badly broken. The main issues (for me) are:

  1. Transcoding when on mobile data, and caching of the next few tracks.
  2. Gapless playback. Pretty much every album I listen to is supposed to have gapless.

It’s almost inexcusable that these features aren’t implemented.

Caching a few tracks is an absolute must, I agree. I also use NFC for Google Music to tap my phone, start a song and turn the volume up. I even wish there was something as simple as a “start playlist” command that could be tapped into if no widget can be made.

Frankly, just attention to the music beyond the “Plex Mix” stuff would be fantastic!

Well, music quality selection made it!!!

However, the playback quality is horrible…absolutely horrible on the S8 via bluetooth. I am not sure what’s going on. But the same song on Google Music or via DLNA in the car is equal to each other, but then on Plex it sounds like 56Kbps. Very noticeable. I have logs in case anyone can decipher.

Now, I just want a widget or even just quick actions to start a Shuffle of a Playlist or something.

Made it, but not working as far as I can tell.

Early 2021 clean-up: implemented (Plexamp)
