Automatically optimize all media and delete the old one for better playback

My nas is not fast enough to transcode two or more 1080p vidoes at the same time. But if I were to transcode ahead of time I would need to do it manually then delete the old one manually to save some space. I think it would save a lot of time to have this done automatically instead of doing it one by one. Please comment if you think this should be added into plex soon.

Optimize can already be restricted to the newest ‘unwatched’ movies.
Thus, if you watch one of these, the pre-transcoded version gets deleted automatically.

i want to optimize all version that cant be directed play then delete the original file. because i’m not the only one who use this plex server. My family share a single nas.

I misunderstood you completely!

Although you can do that, keep in mind that

  1. the transcodes are still optimized for speed, not for quality
  2. every transcode process diminishes the quality
  3. what is ‘optimized’ for one type of client, must not be optimal for another client

If you still want to do that, make yourself an extra folder where you direct Plex to store the optimized files.
You can then:

  1. optimize a batch of videos,
  2. go to that folder where Plex stores the optimized version and copy them out from there to somewhere else
  3. delete the orginal movies from Plex, update library, empty trash
  4. copy the optimized files back into your regular library - they are now treated as if they were new

To do this auomatically, has already been requested:
https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/200499/feature-request-keep-the-optimized-movie-version-only

so please vote there instead.

I will close this thread so not to spread the votes unnecessarily.
