AV1 with TrueHD track transcoding issues

Hello,

When I play a video that is AV1 with a TrueHD track, and the playback device does not support TrueHD, Plex will transcode the video to h.264 and then it will transcode the audio to another format such as opus or flac. The server won’t just transcode the audio only and direct play the video (on a device that supports av1). It will transcode audio only on h.265 however. Can something be done about this? Currently I am running PMS 4.100.1 and have noticed this happens on my friend’s plex server as well but I am not sure the exact version of that one is. I am running Plex on docker and he is running Plex on Windows.

AV1 can only Direct Play currently. A Plex employee has confirmed that AV1 doesn’t work with Direct Streaming:

Media released on Blu-ray disc with TrueHD audio also contains a Dolby Digital (AC3) version of the audio.

AC3 should be supported on most devices, including all Smart TVs and streaming boxes/sticks.

As a workaround, if the AC3 version is available, try selecting it and see if the AV1 video will play without transcoding.
