Backup PLEX server for plex refresh?

Right now I have a Synology DS1520+ with 12tb x4 and 10tb x1 and 1tb read/write cache (yes overkill).
My plan is to get another 12tb and re-do the synology with RAID 5 and re-setup Plex.
Can I copy the APPdata from the plexmediaserver folder to an ext hdd. Re-install plex and copy that folder back to the new plexmediaserver folder and all my settings will be there??

My recommendation, with PMS stopped, is to use HyperBackup to make a full backup of the PlexMediaServer shared folder.

It’ll create a .hbkp file in any shared folder you select.

You’ll copy that file to the new nas and, after PMS is installed (and stopped), RESTORE the backup. It will do the rest.

By doing so, HyperBackup handles restoring ownership, date/time, and permissions which can’t easily be restored from the GUI.

I am running the hyperback up.. Is this what it should create?

..and this is what is in that folder.. The first photo is the appdata/plexmediaserver
second folder is the what is being backup.. they don’t look the same

I wouldn’t put it in the root like that. It’s far safer to put it in a shared folder which you know is on a specific volume.

its actually in usb drive > plex_ext> backup_plex
so then what is the process to restore from the hyperbackup…
Install plex…stop plex plex… restore ???

Yes.

  1. Install Plex app
  2. Stop Plex
  3. Restore HyperBackup image

It will do the rest for you.

dumb question… do i need to tell it where to put the restore ?

It will put it back in the PlexMediaServer shared folder.

That said,

Control Panel - Shared folder - EDIT the PlexMediaServer shared folder

Scroll down to “Location” (it’s a drop down)

Select the volume you want it on (Plex stopped of course)

Move PlexMediaServer to the new volume.

Then start HyperBackup and restore

thank you for all the help.
Do i need to add all the media first or do the hyperbackup restore first ?

Install PMS first but do not start after installation.

You won’t need to initialize anything because the restore will do it all for you
