Bang for buck PLEX server?

Ah I didn’t know that it is different, sorry bout that.

So this is ‘Plex Media Player for Embedded Platforms’ (from my PlexPass page). I just build an image onto a Micro SD card and then boot into it. Thanks.

What about a remote control?

That is all that is required for my PI. In fact I just set up a new PI 3 doing exactly that.

You can use just about any remote that is designed for a PC.
I use:

and I have tested:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00K768DHY/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00224ZDFY/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I had some problems with navigation on the last one but it does work.

Most remotes that have a dongle for the USB port work fine.
BTW: I use a Harmony remote with a hub so my preference for remotes are ones that are IR based and once you have an IR dongle plugged into your PI most IR based PC remotes work fine with it so you end up with extra IR dongles.

One other thing: Once you burn the card and get it working as you want it updates from the internet so you do not have to burn a card again. I find that using my PI is extremely simple and I just leave it on the Plex main menu when I am not using it and switch my HDMI switch or my TV or both to other inputs for other tasks.

Awesome, thankyou for your help. Have a good weekend.

Hi, would like to know how this stupid is working for you. I also have a Samsung ks8000 and looking at exact same setup just can’t decide between nvidia shield or intel nuc7i3 as my plex server. I think Samsung tvs support quite a few video and audio formats.

Do you mean setup is working for you?

Check out the individual core score for your processor on CPU benchmark and it’s roughly a pass mark of 2000/stream. if its a NUC with an i3-7100U @2.4Ghz its pass mark is 3845.

My Celeron Nuc is pathetic as a Plex Server so I’ve just started moving over to an i5.

Also, depends on what your watching on. If your TV supports the format you have, it won’t need any transcoding at all.

Save your money (from buying a shield) and look at an Odroid-C2. It supports 4k/60FPS, H265, HDMI 2.0, has Gigabit Ethernet and has an IR receiver so you can use a remote control on it. Just install Plex Player for Embedded Platforms on it.

Enjoy

An Odroid-C2 as a player, you shouldnt need to transcode much then is what i meant.

Regarding the ODROID, you mention Plex player for embedded platforms, is this the new version of PMP, I didnt realise it was working.

Yes sorry meant setup, phone auto corrected. I have the plex app on my Samsung tv which works well, along with Netflix and prime. I read the Kaby lake processors are good for 4K and hdr, not sure if it is the same with shield. I want it to be future proof for 4K and hdr as my tv supports that. The nuc and shield will work out to similar pricing but the shield has got some nice features with it and I hear good things about it as a plex server

Hey man. Sorry for the late reply. Received my shield and fully setup my external storage. So my current setup is:

2017 Shield 500GB set up as both server and player.
Selected my Synology DS216J as the media library for all my files.
Both connected to a gigabit ethernet line and using h.264/265 encoding to direct play most of my media.

So far it is working fantastic for me. The shield runs plex likes a boss, no stuttering etc and the interface is much better than made for samsung tv plex app. So far most of my files are 1080p 13-15mbps, but i’ve tested a few 40mbps 4K files and it works pretty nice too, barely any stutter unless i fast forward too much. The remote for the shield works great too.

For the rest of the shield platform, it functions better than the KS8000 interface. It is more fluid and responsive. The browser on the shield is much better than on the KS8000. All in all, i have no regrets going for this setup. Cheers.

Perfect. Glad you’re happy.
