Banner art on movie pages?

In the FAQs and tutorials, it is repeatedly mentioned that only TV series use “banner” art. Ok.
So what is the artwork that is found on the top of a movie when you choose “Show/Hide Artwork” and how do you change it?

Believe it or not, that is the ‘background’ or ‘wallpaper’ art.

So its just the top of the wallpaper art or background art? Thats dumb. It doesn’t fit the dimensions.

Do most people create their own background art files to the right dimensions?

It might show more of the background picture if you change the dimensions of your browser window.

I don’t understand what you mean by this.

My browser is full screen, particularly when I’m using Plex Media Player. So I don’t think its that.

What I mean about creating my own background files is this…The “window” for the background art is a narrow rectangle. But most of the background art the Plex pulls is much fatter and doesn’t fit the box.

I never had to create my own jpg or png files for the posters, so I never thought to edit/create my own background files to use. Since it appears that most of the wallpaper files don’t fit the space that they are inserted, I’d guess at least some people are making their own.

I do not know about anyone else but I do not really care much about background art or anything else that does not involve correct playback of my media. As long as Plex correctly plays back my media and presents it in a way that allows playback and correct ordering then there is little else to worry about.

I use Plex to watch media not to look at the pretty pictures prior to playing.

But it is.
Use a web browser and draw its window to be square. You’ll see the whole background picture then.

No. Background pictures are 16:9 aspect ratio - just like your regular tv screen.
If you use other plex clients, the background picture is handled differently.

The web app (and the ‘windowed’ mode of PMP) are primarily intended to be used to manage the server.
For instance, activate the full screen mode of PMP

and you’ll see that the background picture now lives up to its name:

– Interesting. Yeah, I see that now, but then nothing else fits the window.

If I zoom out in the browser to 80%, then it fits.

  • Ahhhh, I get it. Thanks for pointing it out.

– Yup. Works in full screen mode of PMP. I run PMP on my HTPC and use the web interface to do most of my work adding files and art from my desktop. Thanks for pointing that out, too.

Thanks for your help!

So you troll the support forums to ■■■■ on people who are trying to make their plex experience look nice? Do you kick puppies too? Do you tell all the kids in line to sit on Santa’s lap that he’s not real?
