[Implemented] A better way to view background art

Plex Web 3.0.0 introduced an awkwardly-implemented way to partially display the background image in your Artist pages, as discussed in this thread.

I’d like to propose a more sensible and usable alternative.

  1. Restore the old background image style (I would also like to see an option to turn it off altogether, but that’s another request).

  2. Let the ‘Show artwork’ button show the selected Background image in the full browser window, scaled to fit the entire image, with nothing else, or nothing more than a ‘Hide artwork’ button. Perhaps open a new browser tab to show just the image, and they can just close it when done.

Agreed, especially with #1.

I mocked up what restoring the old functionality might look like with the new interface…

Thanks for the mockups. I took a stab at it, but gave it up.

Please feel free to add your vote on my other request to turn backgrounds off (link in OP above), if you agree.

I like the redesigned web interface but the implementation of fan art is poor. Please implement something similar to the mock-up above! Can someone on the Plex Web team please get back to us? Hope this feature request gets some official attention, seeing as how Plex Web is used very frequently by users (particularly those managing their media libraries).

Ugh the backgrounds are just super blurred images from the main covers for each show. The new interface is nice and all but please please please change the background system. I do not want to see this come to the local server version if its going to have backgrounds like this.

My first thought as soon as I opened the new web app was, “Do we have to go through the blurred, dimmed, no background discussion again?” Many of us have been there, done that with the Roku and a few other apps. :-S

Not a fan of the blurry backgrounds, and the new way of optionally turning on a background is not quite what I would expect neither.

I’m fascinated to know who asked for this “feature”. It really just seems like something that’s been added in because the developer found out how to do it with little regard to whether it is what users wanted. I’ve spent time picking the best background images for items in my library and now they are virtually all useless. Thanks for nothing plex devs

Yep, give us the option or put it back to a faded background.

Love the redesign. When can we expect a corresponding update for the Mac app that includes both the aesthetic updates as well as expanded features?

Also, any plans to add some of this functionality to the Apple TV app? I’d like the option to toggle between poster art thumbnails and a very detailed list view with multiple sort options.

Better asked in a new thread, rather than rudely hijacking an existing one with a different topic.

Agree with this wholeheartedly. At least give us the option to go back to background art as it was a few weeks ago. Spent so much time picking and uploading great background images, now that has all gone to waste with this new update.

Give us the option to get it back please. Thanks.

Take a chill pill beck.

I, like others here, want to vent my frustration at this bizarre choice by the Plex devs. I too have spent considerable time and effort curating my library with poster and background images, and that was all undone in one terrible update. Please give us an option to go back to the classic style, I can live with all other changes that the new update brought, but I won’t be buying another Plex Pass until this gets fixed.

Just to be clear, you guys aren’t a fan of the cover-image style of displaying the background image?

+1 for better implementation of “background” images. It is the newest UI/UX change that I absolutely hate. It literally pains me having a super blurry image as a background (causing me headaches) with my other choice a banner style implementation where the artwork doesn’t even fit the image space and forces all the other content down the page. Because yeah, I want to have to scroll to find information that was previously readily available.

I found this mock-up on Reddit and I honestly don’t understand why this isn’t an option for users.

Liked.
The new cover style is absolutely horrendous. It’s using up too much screenspace and adds little to no value to the metadata content. It was perfectly recognizeable when it was embedded in the background. I’m glad the new feature is off by default. To add to that, the background is now useless. Why not just go all black then?
Another great example of how wasteful this feature is:

I decided to write a script that alters artwork so it functions similarly to how it used to.

Thank you so much, @uzegonemad ! This works great for me on Chrome (Windows).

For music it’s hit or miss imo… but for movies/tv series it’s terribad
This reeks of a change for a more mobile centric UI that is being shoehorned into everything as it looks good if you have limited width but who uses the web client on mobile?

Thank you so much!!! I have a feeling they do not care that no one likes this. Not holding my breath, but this is perfect!
