I don’t leave my house. I run a plex server on a MacBook Pro (among other services for myself/the house). I watch mostly on an Apple TV set top box, and my M4 iPad Pro 13". Which is where the problem is.
I keep my monthly outgoings DOWN, so I don’t subscribe to plex or anything like that (I don’t believe in the monthly thing, feels dodgy how everyone’s jumping on the ‘create a paid subscription model, remove features and functionality from the free one that was standard but alas’ bandwagon (I believe in paying for things in one off chunks. I’m not renting anything). So it randomly asks me to hand money over to watch my videos. It’s not an every time thing, I believe it might have something to do with my mesh network.
A mesh network is a way for (finally!) letting big houses use one network instead of multiple ones. It’s a godsend. Other services I use that ONLY run on localhost work just fine- it’s just PLEX.
Plex aren’t thinking about dropping the free subscription are they? I’m ready to go with Jellyfin, but Plex has my watchlist still. Feels like I stumbled onto their prep code for having no free service at all.
Is something major wrong with Plex’s network detection code? I hope it’s not that sloppy ai code is it? Nobody actually likes that stuff.
Edit: one assumes they have a toggle that disables remote viewing entirely? I can’t seem to find it. Because it would be very weird for them to demand payment without having the option to cancel any thought of using the (previously free) remote viewing function.
