Best device to stream Plex

Hello,

I’m using a Synology NAS DS416play as a Plex server, which works smoothly on my roommate’s Xbox One as for now.
Problem is, he’s leaving and taking his Xbox with him. I’m not a gamer and don’t plan to buy an Xbox, plus I find it too big.

I’m looking for a powerful device which can stream my 1080p content smoothly, add CC… 4K support would be great because my TV is 4K ready but not a must at the moment as I don’t have any 4K content.
It looks like NVDIA does the job well but it seems to have a lot a functionnalities I don’t need, so I might go for something cheaper.
Amazon Fire TV looks nice but doesn’t ship to France at the moment.
Google ChromeCast looks weak, I wouldn’t trust such a small device to play smoothly my content… The new 4K one might be good ?
Apple TV sounds a bit expensive.

I’m open to any suggestion as I only know Xbox at the moment.
Thank you.

Odroid C2 running OpenPHT embedded.
One of the few Plex clients which can Direct Play bitmap subtitles (PGS, VOBSUB) and renders ASS subtitles (primarily used in Anime) equally well.

If you can live without 4K and HEVC, a Raspberry Pi3 might do as well.

If you need all the bells and whistles in regard to surround sound and codec support, you might want a real HTPC with OpenPHT or PMP running on it.

Do yourself a favor and ‘wire up’ your Plex client to your server with ethernet.

Thank you for your response.
Anyway I was thinking of something more easy to use and with a Plex interface, not only a upnp server.
I saw that roku 3 seemed to do the job quite well also?

All of the clients I listed are genuine Plex clients.
They have not much to do with DLNA, nor are they servers.

How they look like, you can test on your PC by downloading and installing the PC or Mac version of OpenPHT.

Roku is a very widely used Plex client, yes. But you’ll probably find that you must tailor your content to its abilities, or you’ll end up requiring Transcoding (which your NAS cannot do).

It was also reported that 4K support on the Roku3 is somewhat sub-par.
But see for yourself https://forums.plex.tv/categories/roku-streaming-players
