Best DVR solution..

I’m looking to cut the cord and looking for the best DVR solution either Tablo or DVRhome run. Which integrates better with Plex… Also which has the best feature set accessible via Plex.

I use PlayOn to record all my web hosted stuff. Works great. I need to invest some time to automate the proper naming of things, so I spend a little time doing it manually now, but I am sure I can find something or someway to do this if I put a little effort in.

I use PlayOn as well for a lot of stuff. As far as naming goes I use Sonar and one of its features is that it can monitor a directory for episodes that are missing from monitored series and when a looked for episode shows up in that directory it will move it into the correct location in my TV show structure and name it correctly. So, with that in place, all I have to do is move completed recordings to that monitored directory and PlayOn can do that or it can be done through a Windows scheduled task. No mus no fuss.

Do you get locals and live tv on playon?

No. But I have felt no desire for those. PlayOn is also not a solution for most sports unless you already have a subscription to a package (PlayOn has channels for many, but not all, sports packages) but, if you have such a sub, recording is really not needed as all the sports subs I know of include a function where you can watch older material from their archives. That is the sub already records the content for you.

+1 for Tablo.

Integration? I wrote SurLaTablo which is designed to migrate content off your Tablo into folders named appropriately for Plex. There is a Plex app for Tablo, but it doesn’t work well, at least not for me. The Tablo app works well on its own and if you can pair devices on your local LAN to your Tablo, they can then be used remotely with the Tablo app (e.g. your phone).

Tablo has a really active community and unlike most communities cough, the Tablo team participates as well.

I went the “chromebox hacked to run Ubuntu + TVHeadend + OTA antenna + Hauppage 950Q” route, and you can obviously do something similar with a fancier cablecard tuner if you enjoy paying for your TV.
