That’s purely cosmetic.
I for one am very happy that the black borders are used preferably. That way the subs don’t cover that much of the picture.
If you want to improve readability, enable backgrounds for subtitles in the preferences of the Plex client.
I see this on another thread. Is there a reason the creators of Plex do not feel that ASS files working properly on their player is an issue? See complaints going back several years about this on Android specific devices.
