Best Plex Player For Unstable Connection

Can anyone point me towards the best device which is suitable for an unstable connection. I want to watch plex films on a night but our wifi connections is remote and the speed varies especially at peak between 20mpbs and 2mbps.

Do any of the plex apps/devices build a playback buffer when direct stream/direct play similar to how the mobile clients do. So I could pause the movie at the start of the film for five minutes to build up some buffer to take into account the slow downs in speed.

I am wanting to watch on a LG TV and ive tried the tv app with poor results and also same with the plex app on an xbox one. Can anyone recommend anything else to try

The buffer size in a client is usually set by the device.

Two thoughts:

  1. Change the client to use a lower bandwidth setting
This will use less bandwidth, thereby increasing the amount of “media time” your device can buffer (e.g. if client can buffer X seconds at 10 Mbps, it can buffer ~2.5X seconds at 4 Mbps).
This will most likely force a video transcode by the server. If the server cannot transcode in real time, you will still see buffering (it just moves the problem from the WiFi to the server).

  2. Use a client that supports downloading media
Download to device, then watch from Downloads library on client.
PC/Mac/Linux: Plex Desktop or Plex HTPC
    Mobile clients for phone/tablet/etc.
