Hi all,
i’m looking at building a nas server, no synology, qnap etc; i would like to be able to transcode h265 1080p or a 4k without any problem.
i need help on deciding which setup is the best and what i could improve. budget 300€.
first setup with intel:
CPU-intel i3 6100
MB-Gigabyte GA-H110M-S2H
RAM- HyperX Fury 2x4Gb ddr4
SSD adata premier pro sp600
PSU- be quiet BN220 schwarz 300W
other setup:
CPU-AMD FX6300
MB- ASUS M5A78L-3/USB3
RAM- HyperX Fury 2x4Gb ddr3
SSD adata premier pro sp600
PSU- be quiet BN220 schwarz 300W
as OS i think i will install ubuntu, and obviously i will use plex for transcoding the movies.
which is the best setup for transcode h265 and 4k?
thanks a lot. if you have suggestions i will appreciate them

you will not be able to transcode h265 unless you go for a very high price CPU.
In order to transcode an x265 1080p, you need a passmark of 8000 for one stream.
The CPU you selected will not work for x265 transcode.
For 4k, it depends on the video codec, which one would you consider ?
How many streams at once do you expect ?

idk about the 4k, i thought that, in future, i might need that, but i really don’t know.
about the cpu, are you sure that the fx6300 can’t handle a x265, because i read online that someone with the fx6300 can trancode h265 fine.
btw will be the fx8300 able to transcode x265?

side comment, if your client does not have the capability to red natively x265, plex will transcode that stream in x264.
this is why I am mentioning that number of 8000.
