Hi all,
i’m looking at building a nas server, no synology, qnap etc; i would like to be able to transcode one (max 2) h265 1080p. at the moment i thought about getting:
CPU-AMD FX6300/AMD FX-8320
MB- ASUS M5A78L-3/USB3
RAM- HyperX Fury 4Gb ddr3
SSD adata premier pro sp600
PSU- Be quiet! System Power 8 - 400W
HD- WD RED 4tb
i would like to know if, in your opinion it will be able to transcode max 2 h265 1080p (probably 90% of the time it will be one h265 1080 and a h264 720/1080p or even only one h265 1080p).
if you any suggestion on the setup tell me( budget 500$ )
You need a cpu with minimum 8000 passmark points in order to be able to transcode one 1080 h265, the AMD FX-8320 should do. There is no Plex official statement but reading the forum it seems you need 4 times the power required for a 1080 h264.

with the fx-6300, will i be able to transcode a 1080p h265 with low bitrate (max 4Mbps) or even in this case i will need a 8000 passmark point cpu?

Hard to answer…I cannot make personal tests on PMS side. As PMP I can say that my NUC (in signature) plays 1080p H265 @25fps and with 6Mbps without any issue (software decoding). It has a Broadwell i3 cpu with 3000 passmark points. My NAS DS1515+ with a CPU of 2400 passmark points, cannot transcode H265 but can (easily) a 1080p h264 (5-8 Mbps).

from my owm testing a x265 10 Mpbs file transcoded to x264 consume 8000 passmark.
