I have my Plex Data Folder going to it’s own SSD drive. I shut it down so it’s not running like once every 2 weeks, and image the drive in case of ever needing to restore it.
But I also see in Plex Settings it says “Backup Database Every: 3 Days” So do I not need to create images of the drive to save myself in case of failure? Can I just copy those backups into another location? Just trying to find the best way to backup that data folder in case of ever having to restore it but having to shut it down to image the drive is kind of annoying….
The script looks pretty straight forward - I guess I’m just wondering if I really need that though if I am imaging the whole SSD that the Data Folder resides in (and could restore this Acronis Image to a new SSD if needed)?
After reading the Github, I understand the script also backs up windows reg files as well but I have restored Plex from this 70 gig data folder backup once before and all seemed to work well. Cover art; metadata, all that stuff stayed in tact. Only weirdness was most friends got some weird “offline” messages on the mobile version until they logged out/logged in and reset the defaults with the new Unified experience to re-select the server/shortcuts. Just curious what benefits this would do over the process I mentioned listed above. TIA
That’s one of the things the registry backup will prevent.
If you already have a working backup software, by all means use it. But you’ll have to make sure that Plex server is not running during the backup.
That’s what the linked script is also taking care of.
Alexdavis, you should do a video tutorial on YouTube showing the steps if you ever get bored . People, including me, are so afraid of messing something up or not backing it up properly. If there was a first time video walkthrough I’m sure many more would be willing to do it themselves since they have a good reference, esp since many of us arent too familiar with Powershell and/or scripts. Just a thought!
(I wanna try this but am afraid of messing something up so for now I gotta stick to just Acronis Imaging my segregated Plex Data SSD drive which at least backs up the main stuff, although misses the OS registry stuff)
